When is a Qualifier not a qualifier? (re: eBay auction)

When is a Qualifier not a qualifier?

When it is not mentioned in an auction. This kind of misleading auctions just makes me want to holler. This is nothing new, just venting a little.

Yeah - just a little slippery salesmanship - it's all over the place - Buyer beware!

  • I love these kind of questions--When is a qualifier not a qualifier?. It brings me back to my childhood and Batman tv show. The Riddler would always toss these out. Like "If a brown bear doesn't hibernate, when will he be in Boston?" Robin, the young gay male, never gets it right. But, Batman always figures them out. Here's a few of my favorites --"What keeps time, pees blood and never visits the bank?" "Where are chickens like banjos and tacos are like government food stamps?", "Grandma can see them, your third cousin can feel them and your dad likes to suck them like a lollipop?", "This board game has no Park Ave. or Marvin Gardens, but it does have a spastic monkey who cooks beans?".

I just was never able to solve any of them. I felt inferior and developed a complex growing up. I'm a stupid man.

I go back and forth on qualifiers. On the whole I think they're necessary, but in cases like this I think they're not worth it. I think this problem would be curtailed if PSA printed the grades like:
    NM-MT 8OC
    instead of
    NM-MT 8
    (OC)

That makes it a lot harder to ignore, I think. Or if they just printed it like this
    EX-MT 6
    that would straighten everybody out.

    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay
  • Steve,
Lord knows that I hate to sort through auctions that I wouldn't have bid on if the title actually described what they were selling. But at least, there is a clear pic at the top that allows you to see what it is. Misleading ... kind of. Criminal .. .not quite. Pain in the tush ... big time.
In this case, it won't sell, so at least most folks at catching it.

Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.
  • I agree that this is borderline dishonest. Particularly when he says the "value" is $300.

I have occasionallly gotten stuck winning cards that have a qualifier not in the title. Usually it is when it is a seller selling lots of other cards that are not oc, and I put in bids to esnipe based strictly on the title. These are only low dollar wins, as any high dollar card I look carefully at the scan. The last time this happened, I left a negative feedback. The seller went beserk, but I told him that it was a negative experience for me to receive a card that was OC, when that isn't what I bid on. Hopefully, he will include the qualifier in the title in the future.

The worst was a few years ago when pics were frequently left out. I won an OC card that wasn't in the description or title. The cert # was listed. I asked for a refund, but the selleer wopuldn't take it back. He said I should have checked the cert #!!

That's like a seller refusing to refund a purchase by saying you should have checked his feedback before bidding!

This riddle is a bit disturbing, lol.

As for this auction, I think it is definately 100% dishonest and the seller should be labeled a scam artist (we might have to check with John Kerry first, he doesn't like labels). If the seller has room in his auction title for "*Low Reserve*", then he definately has room to put OC in the title. The only purpose for this is too rip somebody off. I think we should create a black ball list on these people.

I sent this email to him
