Bo Jackson Baseball & Football Basic Set

I have just requested that the above set be added to the Set Registry. My idea is to form a basic set including all of Bo Jackson's baseball and football cards from his playing years. I don't want to do it as individual sets, but rather as one combined set. IMO, he is probably the best two sport player of all-time and a very unique player. You might can make an argument for Deion Sanders, but my money is on Bo Jackson. Just thought, I would drop my idea out there to see if: (1) anyone wants to provide me input on what cards should be included and what weights the cards should be given; and (2) anyone else is interested in the set besides me.

    Mike-

Sounds like a great idea. Why don't you take the initiative and do whatever makes the most sense. Frankly - grade weights are a non-issue for a long time (until a number of people start putting this set together). As for what cards in the set - I would say look at other player sets to get an idea of what the differences are between the basic and the master player sets.

I like it. Bo's cards are hot. Or at least saleable as opposed to unsaleable. His unfortunately short career will limit the amount of cards in the set to under 100, I imagine, so it'll be doable. Making it a 2-sport set makes perfect sense for a 2-sport athlete.

If I ever do a player set, this may be the one. What a shame his career ended the way it did.

I'm looking to buy his polo and hockey rookie cards - anybody have any??? image

I think it's a cool idea. He was a great talent, and collecting the cards in two different sports is a neat twist.

  • I also put in a request for a Bo Jackson Player Set in the Misc section. It would be hard to peg it to either FB or BB. I love Bo. He won his Heisman my freshman year at Auburn. I am looking forward to starting this set and meeting all of you "Bo knows" fans.

  • Brent,

Email me. I have put a list together of the cards that I think should comprise the set. I will send you my version and we can compare notes. I come up with 88 cards that I think should be in the set. It would be interesting to see if you have included the same cards and where we differ.

  • Good morning everyone,

I have submitted my sugggested weightings for the Bo Jackson BB and FB Master Sets and which ones should be in the Basic Set. I have also sent the lists to Mike (Imafishinnut) for review. The sets should be up soon with any luck.

I also requested a combined Master set that would include both BB and FB cards.

    Just do it,

  • Great idea on the "BO Knows" sets!

I had the wonderful opportunity to see Bo patrol the OF in KC, on that god-awful turf they had.

There were many times, he used to have his pile of sunflower seeds, on the turf, in the OF, right by his position. I never saw any other player "mess with his seeds", as he just left the pile there as the Royals would bat.

    Good times.....

  • Personally I think that the Bo Jackson 90 score b/w card should be listed in the top 200 cards of all time (that and the Bill Ripken FF card). No it is not the most expensive but very attractive in design and thought. Plus Bo was a mega star at the time.

    Kevin
  • onlychild,

While I am not sure it is one of the top 200, it is without a doubt one of the most attractive Bo cards out there. The amount of hype that surrounded Bo in the late 80's and early 90's still boggles the mind. And to think, we have the management of the Bucs to thank.

  • Here are the cards that I had in mind for the Bo Jackson Combined Baseball/Football Basic set. I have included some cards that normally wouldn't be included in a basic set (e.g., the baseball cards showing Bo in football gear); but, this is not a normal basic set IMO. I am open to adding other cards, but I think these are the most important cards. There are a total of 88 cards. Bighurt4's weighting looked good to me. Just wished I knew whether PSA was going to do a combined baseball/football basic set or separate one.

  • Brent & Mike, I totally agree about Bo. I went to Auburn 1982-1986. We had some awesome teams then with Bo, Charles Barkley and Frank Thomas. I've started a web site, although in its infancy stages due to limited time to devote to it. (www.freewebs.com/bojacksoncollector/). See whatcha think. Waaar Eagle!

Nice site Mark. I gpt to talk to Bo in line at a grocery store in Auburn. He was very gracious. His Auburn career was amazing and clearly began Auburn's great run during the 80's. I hope you register a set. It is a ball reliving his career.

Anyone interested, Last week I went through an old album and found about 200 Bo Jackson cards. Not sure how they would grade out but all are pack fresh. If any1 is interested, e-mail me at twodueces22@yahoo.com. Joe

  • Well, I am over 60% in the Master set and it has been slower going than I would have thought. I have a submission in with about 25 more Bo's and a monster I am putting together with 81 more. It has been so much fun going through all of the old cards and reconnecting with the aura that surrounded him during the late '80's and early 90's.

No, but I do have 1500 87 topps Bo cards.
  • Brent - I decided to move away from the Master Set and will only be collecting the Basic Set. Most of the cards that strictly belonging to the Master Set were sold to a fellow board member. It was easier to just delete my set rather than removing the cards I sold.

If anyone is interested in buying the reminents of my Master Set, I can provide a list of the remaining cards after Christmas. Will be out of town until then.
