  • I have visited your web gallery and the medals are incredibly beautiful! How can we learn more about this incredible sculptor? Also, what is the translation of the medal you use on your signature line? Is it pro- or anti-British?
Thanks in advance, hope these aren't dumb questions...

Hi Sam, Let me be the first to welcome you aboard. There are never stupid questions image For the most part, the only thing written about Karl Goetz are two books written by Gunter Kienast: The Medals of Karl Goetz and Goetz II. Volume I ranges in price from $75-100 and Volume II can fetch up to $200. Expensive, but necessary if you're interested in Karl Goetz beyond looking at an occasional image.

The medal in my sig line was made by his son, Guido in 1939. It is a rare medal made from Cast Iron which commemorates the sinking of the Britishship Courageous by the German U-Boot #29. It shows Neptune holding the ship (signifying the sinking) on the obverse, and the skeleton (signifying death) standing in the water on the reverse. It is definately a "pro-German" medal.

Feel free to PM me anytime if you have more questions.

    Again, Welcome!! S

Goetz does use Satire with a capital S. I wondered about the attitudes of the German people at that time towards the world. Here are a few things I learned about their attitude towards the Versailles treaty and their own government.

    Stab-in-the-back – November Criminals.

    Sucking Germany dry.

    Non-negotiable – a gun to Germany’s head.

Split in half and carved up for the delectation (amusement) of the allies.

Shameful disgrace and double-crossing of the German people – most had expected the implementation of Wilson’s 14 points and not the harshness of the Versailles Treaty.

Scott, keep imaging and keep posting!
