My first show this weekend

I am setting up at my first show this weekend. I am pretty psyched. Even though Ebay is the best way to go probably. There is still something fun about actually handing the card you sell to the customer or seeing the cards you buy in person. I'll have graded and raw vintage hockey with some semi vintage unopened wax.

I know the feeling. Ebay is probably the best way to go, but setting up at a show and dealing face to face is nice. I have been thinking about setting up again at the Fort Washington, PA. show again.....maybe next year. Who knows.
    Best Of Luck.

Good luck Paul. I used to do shows about 13 years ago.
I can say interacting with people that come to your table was
always fun and chit chat about the sport or certain players.
Overall, just sharing hobby views on a face to face basis. A lot has
changed since then. PSA had just started out.....no one knew what graded was. You got higher prices (about 50% at times) for your card(s). Remember Beckett's fun card section? They used to have it in the back where people showed pictures of their cards that they wrote something on it. Like a bubble blurb from the player's head saying something.
Well, to pass the time, we used to sit there and make up dirty stuff on it.....hehe. The good ol days. Have fun.

Doing shows is an absolute blast. If I was a gazillionaire, that's what I would do full time. Most people only want to pay Ebay prices at shows so the only way to make it better than Ebay is to use your "dealer side of the table" opportunities to make some great buys from collector's.
  • Paul,

Good luck. I loved doing shows. I think the "walkups" trying to trade or sell their cards are the best part.

A couple of hints... watch your stuff. The most common ripoff is the guy sets a note book or something down & then picks it up & also picks up whatever was underneath it. I found I sold alot more stuff if I stood up. There is nothing like looking for something special & the seller is all kicked back eating or messing with his cell phone. I always had 2 little signs: "Cash Talks!! then I had "I speak CASH!!" The buyers always found humor in it. The toughest time I had was not spending more than I made...

I hope it is a positive experience. Let me know how you did.

    Best of Luck

  • Thanks for the nice comments all. I am done with day two and regretably there will not be a day 3. I did not sell a single thing as embarassing as it sounds. Not that it is a bad thing because I can bust my wax boxes for all of the good cards. It is amazing how many people still thing graded cards are worse than death. All I can say is it is much easier now to sell vintage cards on Ebay that it is at a show. On a side now there are still a lot of people that think Mint in 1983 (when I was 6) is still what mint condition is now. Eventually those dealers I think will go the way of the buggy whip when cars were invented. Oh well it was a learning experience.

  • Good luck!!Let us know how you do.I was thinking of doing the same but right now,I'm doing pretty good on Ebay.
  • See my post above it was not pretty. I will be sticking with Ebay next time I get the urge to sell some things.
