Long term holding ...1999 Silver Proof Set or 2001 Silver Proof Set

Any opinions on these two sets. The seller below is selling at a great Bin price and I was wondering for a long term(5 year) holding which set would appreciate in price more.
I was thinking of picking up a few and would like to hear what others think.

Thanks
Tom

The 1999 silver is a good buy...they are trending at $240 to $250 range on ebay right now. I have many of these put away in the do not open for 10 years box. image
  • It still seems expensive to me. The Mint produced a lot of sets. This seller has a lot of sets. My wife bought one so she can complete here series of proof sets, but they don't seem a great investment to me.

At $200 each, if you pick up a few sets, why that starts adding up to enough money to buy a nice MS 66 Walker or a high end classic commem or a cool DMPL Morgan or a Gem Buffalo nickel or something...

edited to add: But that is my opinion. If I was always right on my investment opinions I've be living in a penthouse in New York right now image

    Thanks for the tip...PURCHASED!
  • That is a good price. I would try to turn them over at the first oportunity. I cant figure out why they sell for as

    much as they do. Bob

Looks like the 2001 Silver set that he was selling for $99 (delivered) are all gone. One buyer(harborcoins) bought 300 of them.
I did purchase 2 of them before they were gone.

Still kicking around buying 1 or 2 99's.

I'll let you know! Guy sells alot of mint products....great feedback. I would set the percentages at 96% success.
  • I'd recommend for long term hold at about 70-100 years.

you may find little imperfections with these sets.
  • I think the prices on these are way too high for the fact that these are so common and plentiful. The best thing you can do is, buy a bunch of the next coming years and selling them about a year after you get them. If they are a little more popular, like the 99 and 01, you'll make a lot of money. If not like the 02 and 03 then, no big deal, you'll probably still make a decent profit. You kind of have to predict it. I don't think there is any long term for these, IMO. I would like to think there would be but I just don't think they have much of a chance. But go with how you feel. My luck i'll probably be totally wrong on my prediction.

I picked up two 2001 sets this morning. I thought it odd that he had so many for sell when he hadn't sold any recently. Clean FB with a street address convinved me to by a couple. The biggest margin lies in the 2001's.
I don't have the 1999 so have been thinking of getting one for my set, just a little short on cash right now.

<< <i>I'd recommend for long term hold at about 70-100 years. >>

    5 sets @ $199.00(free ship) = $999.75
    ebay trends $250/ea x 5 = $1250.00
    20 day profit = $ 250.75(aprox)

    recommendation ignored...but thanks!

  • The market for those sets is on fire right now, due to the statehood quarter program - as each state is added, it creates more demand for the previous years' sets. As stated above, eBay trends is $250 on the '99 sets, but I have sold them as high as $270 plus shipping. The 2001 sets have been trending in the $140-150 range, but seem to be creeping up a bit quicker than the '99s (that's a week to week creep!) There are still alot of folks sitting on unopened boxes of these, since the mint is only midway through the 50 state program, and they know the prices will continue to rise with demand. I would not hold them for longer than 2-3 years....in fact, once you get them, I would turn a few on eBay and recoup some of your buying costs. It's hard to believe he's selling them at these prices and shipping for free...I guess he figures he paid mint prices for 'em a few years ago, so it's all gravy, and he gets people in the door. ( I would have answered sooner, but I had to log into eBay and pick up some sets!)image

I agree with what others said about this guy smelling like a rat. Anyone who would have that many sets would be smart enough to know what the market is. Just can't see someone dumping that many sets so far under the market prices. An example is the guy is selling 1999 proof sets for $59.95. Bid on the Coin Dealer Newsletter is $70. He could sell them to a number of people for $67 and not pay any ebay or pay pal fees. Looks to me like this guy is working a long con and is making his big move. Be careful out there.
  • I guess a good many of us will soon enough find out!image

  • Another thought - since no Paypal, I'm gonna make sure it's a postal money order, so the "inspectors" can get involved if need be...but hopefully, I'm getting way ahead of things!

    Good luck.
I just bought a couple of 1968 proof coins from the seller and had no problems.....not much in the way of communication (not bad, just not much) and, as mentioned, there is no paypal. So, he did wait out the 10 day period (seemed like more) before sending.

Received the coins last night after I got back from a business trip. Both are fine and as pictured/sold/bought.

So, unless he was building up for a scam, he was/is on the up and up (at least, with me).

Anyone hear anything lately on these auctions yet. I just received a reply from an email but very likely automated.

I think these sets will be a $500.00 by 2008. I think a lot of these sets are broken up to get individual coins slabbed. Also the packing alone of the 99 Silver sets is selling for $40.00 plus on ebay. These will continue to rise as more sets are broken up.

    My two cents.

OK....I received a personal Check in the amount of $1,000 (which is a full refund) from Impulse coin in todays mail. I hope that he is refunding everyone else also! If you have not received your refund yet...I strongly suggest you call the Mitchell Police and the Minneapolis FBI and record with them your complaint.

Good luck everyone...(Now I will feel 100% safe in 5 days when the check actually clearsimage )
