Neat find.image I'd grade "about good" and, if offering for sale, price at about $15 to $20.

Oh, I'd go a little higher than that.

My opinion: VF details, corroded, net VG, and worth maybe $60 as it is.

Could be PROPERLY conserved and would be worth twice that, or more.

    Nice find! image

  • I grade it Cool-10. Now THAT is a real coin; circulated, dropped on the ground 200 years ago, then found by a coin collector. Your coin is worth more to you than what anyone will ever pay you. What I mean is that it's special to you because you found it. To someone else, they will just look at a price guide and shoot you a price based on G or AG bid. Definitely keep it.

Some advice: The coin needs a protective layer of oil to slow further surface deterioration. If you don't have access to Blue Ribbon or Coin Care, then try olive oil. The oil will make the color more uniform and the coin will appear more attractive. The coin could use a professional conservation too (remove debris, brush, then oil), but don't try this yourself unless you have good instructions.

    BTW, it's S-269, a common variety.

    Very cool find!

Sure, but you don't want to just start cleaning with a thorn. You must first loosen the dirt and debris with Xylol or Acetone. Try to use a "fresh" thorn and not a dried one, or else you may scratch the copper. Finally, the thorn method only works on dirt, and not porosity or corrosion.

  • That actually has a lot of detail for a dug coin and isn't tarnished completely black. All the environmental damage would probably kill it, though. Great find. image

I bet that coin was close to XF when it went into the ground. Very nice find. I bet you get one of those shiny awards Lord Marcovan hands out in the Metal Detecting forum for that one!
