Why do people keep bidding on the same common card?

I only have about six cards to go to complete my 67 BB set. One of the cards I need to complete the set is # 82 Steve Barber. For some reason this card has been tough to find. I have seen three auctions for this card in near mint or better in the last few months. It is a $ 2 card, but usually goes for ten times as much when auctioned. The same bidder keeps winning this card and is now bidding on another of the same card today. My question is why does the same person need to keep bidding on the same common over and over?

Perhaps the card was short printed... judging from the PSA population report, it looks like that is a possibility, as most 1st series commons have populations in the 40-50 range, but Barber has only 24 submissions, 17 are 8's, 2 are 9's, so that would suggest it's not a difficult card when it comes to condition. I checked my 67's and I have one, it's a pretty nice looking card, well-centered, probably somewhere around NM depending on who's grading it. I see a PSA 8 went for $51 last week. Hmmm... makes me want to send mine in, but I don't think it has a shot at an 8.

sounds like he has to justify to himself the value. does he keep winning it as well? or is he just bidding the card up?
    Good for you.
  • Yeah the same bidder keeps winning the card. Apparently not a set builder since he keeps winning the same card. Last I checked tonight it was around $ 13 - $ 15 for a raw copy.

jaybyrd - there is no figuring obsessions - for years I bought every 1961 Topps #10 Robin Roberts that I saw. I never really knew why; it was Pavlovian: I'd see it on a table at a show and, next thing I knew, it was mine.

Is the guy's user id something like "luvsbarbercards"...?

It's like Mel Gibson in "Conspiracy Theory." He can't stop buying copies of "Catcher in the Rye." Me, if I see a PSA 10 Johnny Bench card my left eye starts twitching spasmodically, even if I have three copies of that card already.
  • Johnny Bench I can understand, but Steve Barber? Next thing you know people will start hoarding Minnie Rojas cards.

I just won one Tuesday, it's really a great looking card which is the only reason I bought it. I'm gonna put it on the shelf right beside my 29 1969 Minnie Rojas'
    Topps Heritage

    Now collecting:
    Topps Heritage

    1957 Topps BB Ex+-NM
    All Yaz Items 7+
    Various Red Sox
    Did I leave anything out?

People on Ebay do obsess on certain things, including "names". I have sold both cards and brewania to folks at goofy prices because the item matches their surname.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

Sometimes it's the actual player buying the card, here is two examples I have that I have sold:

    1967 topps Joe Auer

    1967 Joe Auer #2

For some reason I think the card is Short printed, because everytime I sell one it get over $10 for a raw VG/EX common.

That was gonna be my guess, maybe someone who knows barber or barber himself? Maybe he is a babrber and wallpapers his baber shop in barber cards?
  • Are there such things as barber shops anymore? Actually it is a board member that is always trying to sell stuff on the Vintage Board.
