If you were going to pay a dealer to help you get an upgrade, who would you choose?

Personally, I don't think anyone has all that much pull at any of the major services. Apparently, some here disagree. So, coin geniuses, tell us, who would you submit through, and why? image

I'd choose whomever bragged the most about his abilities to get up-grades AND charged the highest (increased value) fees in the event of an up-grade. After all, it must be true and it must be worth it, right?image NOT.

James Halperin....the dude can grade, he's a partner in NGC, sees more coins everyday that anyone else.

Now, the only problem is my box of 20 coins must be worth a min of $2mm for him to give me the time of day.image

With you Andy, as my co-pilot.

Isn't he a partner at Heritage? That would be a bad combination (partner at both) if it is true.

Didn't he win the grading world series? So of course he should know the best if your coin would upgrade.

I didn't know he was a partner in NGC either. It's no different than DHRC and PCGS, is it? Seems the only grading service without a conflict of interest is ANACS (and ICG?)

Pay who for what ? You are kidding, correct ?

If this was to happen it would be a local dealer in the area. Most likely only a opinion would be asked from the dealer to see if it matches my opinion. Compensation for him would be a little extra business, stuff you usually would not buy but will not get hurt on, but outside of that, nada.

I trust my own instints. One of these days maybe a upgrade will be tried to see if the instints are worth a hoot.

    D. Hall has clearly stated numerous times that the graders at PCGS have no idea who's coins they're grading or who submitted them, so it makes no difference who submits them..........right??image

I would want David to walk my coins thru the grading room

and say, "SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THESE COINS".

Halperin and Heritage would get my vote. They know as much as anyone about the grading game. If there is an edge, they probably already know about it.

  • It was mentioned in the other thread that certain dealers do seem to have a way with getting good grades out of the major services. I'd have to research which ones seem to have the most 'luck', before naming any names, though. Maybe dealers in the west L.A. area (Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Brentwood, etc) might have more pull since they service the rich and famous collectors. I'm sure if the governator went into a shop there with a bunch of coins, he'd get upgrades on probably, 75% or more of them.

Ya know, that's a real good question. A few candidates come to mind with the present leader IMHO being Heritage.
Stands to reason the higher grades they get for your set if you sell thru them, the more $ they make. Good reason.image
  • Personally, I would submit it myself.
I just don't trust the dealers to not "rip me off" somehow in the process.
