I think stupid would be the wrong word. Insane seems more appropriate.

Depends on how much you value money.

Money has value only to the extent people believe it has value. Is it surprising that
some of us believe that some money has value beyond what it was issued for? As
long as they make coins that are beautiful, historic, instructive and a hoot to collect
then not only are coins money but they're also worth money.

    Sometimes a lot of money.

  • "rare" coins - yes
And all collectible coins are like everything else. They are worth what someone else is willing to pay for them.

Now that brings up quite a few questions. What is rare? What is a lot? And what is anything really Worth? image

Not always some very rare coins are very cheap because of low demand.

Some coins that are only somewhat scarce will bring a lot of money because of high demand. But are they worth it?

  • I happen to have a very rare Cambodian coin that according the Krause world coin book only 1,001 were minted in aluminum.

It's not really worth a lot of money, even to me.

I'd happily trade it for a coin that's only scarce, like maybe a 1955/55 us cent of which there are quite a few more, or how about an 1893-S (or 1894 I'm not picky) Morgan dollar.
Some call it an accumulation not a collection

putting together a MS 60 and up Morgan set....60% complete...otlher 40% probably take the rest of the decade!

  • Some coins have built in intrinsic value, ie gold & silver off the spot prices. Others have no intrinsic value at all.
All rare coins whether they have intrinsic value or not trade at prices the buyer is willing to pay. Worth therefore is dictated by the market.

Lets face it, if nobody wanted the coins we collect; they would only be worth face value. Now that is something baseball cards and comic books cannot deliver on. While we appreciate the value of what we collect, we all collect what we can afford. Thus our individual collections are controlled by our spendable income. If we buy coins and they appreciate in value, great. We can hold them and hope they go up in value, or sell them and buy another coin. Or just cash in and end up with more money than we invested. People who should have never got into the hobby or had bad financial luck or poor health end up cashing in. Those who collect ONLY for investment purposes live on the edge. But coin collectors tend to appreciate the coins more than the value. Thus I would still collect even if they were not worth much. Just my opinion.

No, please send them to me and I'll send you a few bucks in return.

  • Rare coins are worth lots of money now. I can trade them for cash so I know they are worth a lot of money image

Intrinsically they have value in relation to the pleasure/joy/good feeling they give those who collect them. If in the future large groups of collectors decide they don't enjoy collecting anymore coins will not be as valuable.

the mistake is in measure "value" purely in terms of $$$.

i measure the value of the coins in my personal collection by many more factors than that, such as just how much i like the coin.

Rare coins are worth a lot of money to those in the know, AND, those in the dough. When sold, can bring a nice profit(tax free?). And, if they are gold or silver are worth their weight in gold/silver. Plus they can be pretty. AND, they are a lot cheaper to collect over the years than years of therapy. After years of this kind of therapy, you will still be able to hold them in your hand. To some, like my wife, $100 is a LOT of money to spend on a coin, especially if it's in a stupid piece of plastic where you can't even touch it!
