Can some cool looking darksides be picked up at shows cheap?

I would like to actually add to my super cheap collection. Maybe get some uncirculated or proof pieces. Maybe a few toned pieces.

  • Junk boxes are a good source of some nifty pieces but aren't often Unc. Know what you're looking for/at to best judge what kind of deal you're getting. If the coin is in a 2x2 then like as not the dealer has it priced at or near catalog value. Most coins go for 40-60% of Krause estimates but some series and exceptional examples are undervalued there.

Modern world coins are getting very difficult to find cheap in unc. There will be
many very low priced modern uncs but they'll almost invariably be horde coins
which really aren't priced too low by Krause. The better coins rarely appear as
uncs and when they do they'll disappear pretty fast at catalog prices. Some of
these are outright steals but generally the truly rare ones simply won't show up
    at all.

The best bet is to be patient and get a good idea of what's available and what isn't.
Catalog prices are up many fold on some of the better pieces but no more seem to
be available on the market than before the increases. Try to get a look at junk box-
es and poundage to get some insights into what the tougher coins are.

If you have the time and patience, some very nice coins can be picked out of junk or bulk bins. I have found MS65 and MS62 coins (1808) in such a bin. Many, many pre-1900 coins can also be found. They probably won't be in the greatest shape but you can't beat the price.

I'm finding that less and less true-maybe for the junk or poor examples but quality pieces (and yes, there are still plenty of exceptions) are nearer to catalog and sometimes over. But who's to say when and if Krause will be up-to-date accurate? It's an unwieldy thing after all.

Try more like 80% Krause if in Unc. The days when you could find the really nice stuff for wholesale appear to be behind us.
