How were early coins placed into circulation from the U.S. Mint?

In bags? In rolls? Through banks?

I would assume in bags distributed to banks, but I wasn't around at the time so it's just a WAG.

It would be interesting if someone could cite a reference.

In a lot of instances, individuals would take their precious metal to the mint and the mint would refine it and mint coins and the persons could later come and get their coins.

I didn't have to buy one as my local library has one.

If you haven't seen this book, stop at your library and see if they have one. You'll find it very informative.
