One from ever country - a new approach?

Alright chaps got me thinking here. Don't worry i am not doing this (not for the forseeable future), but maybe in 20 years time i might think about having a go at something like this.

So one coin from every country right? yep got that. Now what about one coin from every country in about VF from the 17th century? Or hell why not lets make it the 12th century! image

Question; is a One From Every 12th Century Country possible? Seriously?

Or should i just stick to my Stephen pennies? image

My personal opinion is that unless you had the available cash of Donald Trump or Bill Gates, NO this would not be possible for the common working stiff.

I figured as much but i had to ask, maybe just Western Europe would be good... I dunno i've just got this thing about the 12th century. I'm currently doing some research on King Stephen and Empress Matilda.

The price on 12th century Korean coins recently came tumbling down after a horde was discovered about a year or so ago.

You will have to define what constitutes a country, the 20th century is easier because nation-states are common, but it was not always so.

Yeah that is something that seriously needs refining, such as France, is it Normandy, Brittany, Aquitaine? Then we have Spain which is Castile and Aragon etc. Italy and Germany... hmm yeah.

I didn't say that a 12th century collection was not without some major issues that would need sorting but it could be a fascinating research project with a totally absorbing lifetime search and no doubt a very rewarding one, it's not just like change searching through a bucketful of junk world coins in a shop, how boring's that?

No i think a real challange would be something like this! image

Everyone but me it seems likes 19th and 20th century coins, personally i don't care for them all that much (sure they have nice designs i won't dispute that) but they like the history of Kings, castles, plagues, wars of religion etc. that draws me to coin collecting in the first place. Hammered coins are always a plus point.

  • A while ago I made an "existence table" which was triggered by the mess called German States. I wanted to see what entity issued coins in what period and currently belongs to which nation. Turned out to be a fairly long list for the period covered by Krause - slightly more than 1,300 entities, including Gluckstadt, Fraustadt, Hermannstadt, etc image I just hate to think what happens if you go further back in time image

I agree it would be a great way to learn history and geography. image

Actually, I've contemplated something like that for German issuers ... but haven't been able to bring myself to construct a table like Philip's -- which I assure you was a major undertaking in of itself. There are some issuers who issued so little (and of which only a tiny portion has survived) that even in Good, the prices start in five figures.
