Guess the grade: 1794 Cent

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,626 ✭✭✭✭✭
Guess the grade on this 1794 cent (S-24). It was included in an old collection assembled between the late 1930's and about 1960. I sent it to PCGS for grading and it was holdered, so "bodybag" is not the answer. Will post the answer later.

Answer: Coin is slabbed as PCGS XF40. For those of you familiar with the way PCGS grades early copper, it has XF45 detail by their standards, but the (extremely light) rim bumps knocked it down a bit.

I bought this from a friend 2 years ago and sent it into PCGS myself. I said it was net VF-35, he said XF-40. We usually send such coins to PCGS and I pay him based upon the grade it gets. If it bodybags, I get a deal, so that's fine with me. In this case, I guess it went his way, but I'm happy to have it in a PCGS XF-40 holder.

Grading early coins always confounds me. I'll go EF40

    Wow, SUPER coin! image

I'm guessing the photo is a little overlit/over exposed and it has a nice chocolate color.

I'd buy it as a Very Fine all day long and twice on Sunday, let me guess PCGS VF35, would not be surprised at EF40.

    again, great coin, I'm envious.

    MS69 in a PCI holder.

Joking aside, I'd bet PCGS EF-40.

I'm guessing they holdered it at VF-35.

  • VF-30 is my original guess. From a first look at the coin. But I think it looks great.image

I'll say xf/45 depending on luster and how much "pop" the surfaces have. Wouldn't surprise me if it lands in an au/50 holder, although at that level the surfaces aren't quite sharp enough.

Look at the hair detail on the forehead. MUCH too sharp for a vf. Really even too sharp for an xf, to me anyways. These are always flat at the ear, so you can't really go by that feature.

The more I look, the more I'm starting to lean towards au. I'll stick to my gut though, and say xf/45.......then again, the luster..........if there is any............

I agree the obv makes strong claims to AU detail, but there is some weakness on the reverse plus a few digs on both sides that IMO will preclude AU. EF45 would not surprise me, AU would surprise me a little.

    30 also
  • 45. But I too wouldn't be blown away to see a 50 on the slab. it's got good detail, and I am used to staring at photos like this, so I will say 45.

Sounds fair. Eac can call it "Fred" for all anyone cares... it's still worth EF money.
I still don't see why they call it something other than what the market does, what good does it do anyone?image
Yet to receive any explanation of the "EAC" bs..
