OT: Should I go?

  • Best of luck in HI! I'm sure the opportunities there are very much worth pursuing. It's difficult to live abroad with a spouse.. I lived in Russia for 4 months several years ago in college... something that wouldn't be possible at this point in my life.

I work in a room full of guys who worked overseas. By far the biggest problem was the happiness of their wives.

    John,
If you are not going, then why are you selling off your personal collection?

    John,

Selling off the personal collection for other reasons...

Will essentially be taking a pay cut by moving to Hawaii since the wife wont be working, will be starting a family, more expensive in Hawaii...and only a couple of hundred dollars more from the Navy...

I want to pay off a chunk of the mortgage on our house in Illinois and have some money around in case the budget gets tight in Hawaii...

That being said, you should buy something from me!! You can even have a return priv!! image

You can always go to Hawaii while in the military. Chile sounds like a one time opportunity. Besides, being stationed in Hawaii sucks.

Is it still up in the air or are you settled on Hawaii?

I don't know much (well, anything) about the career path for an oceanographer (heck, I don't even pay much attention to my own...), but...who would write/sign your fitrep in Chile? How would your selection board look at it? (I suppose it could be positive, negative, or neutral---is it a one-of-a kind opportunity where you would look really impressive, or would they not count it as anything more than a boondogle? Is the Hawaii job an important ticket to punch? What kind of family support would you have? (Would your wife go to a local hospital to have a baby and if so what kind of standard of care do they have there? Hawaii, though rife with Army doctors, does have epidurals image). Just a few thoughts that popped into my head. Chile sounds great, but Hawaii might be better for the career, and the marriage!

Without reading all the threads here I have only one wise word:

    Hawaii

  • Well the other thing we (Human Resources) do in the company I work for is send employees on international assignments. And if your wife isn't happy with the move to Chile, then definitely don't go. The majority of international assignments that end prematurely are due to family issues.
