30 years from now

Which cards or sets from the last 10 years will be in demand by collectors 30 years from now ? There is so much garbage out there, which brands or cards have the best potential ? Will it be just the popular Rookie cards ? Rookie auto cards ? Chrome rookie refractors ?

I don't think anything issued during the past 10 years or so is worth a dime personally. Eventually all the new stuff will be worth even less than it is today, especially all these crazy inserts and "rare" numbered limited edition cards. There are so many of them that the overall appeal of them is being weakened more and more every time a new one comes out.
  • Besides the bulk of modern stuff that should continue to devalue, I'm betting that post-1972 Topps regular issues in high grade PSA should be cut by 50% in the next five years.

    I agree...but which ones?
Here comes my bias....the Topps Heritage set has been popular and held pretty good value and is a collector favorite with respect to the design....I pick that as one of the "desired" Master Sets in the year
    2034.

i dunno.. and we'll probably have to let time determine which ones.. probably the ones with the best overall rookie selection? i dunno.. i'm not saying they'll increase in value drastically or anything, but I believe there will always be a popular set from any particular year that will retain some sort of decent collector base, and therefore retain some value..

Aside from Topps Heritage, there aren't really many other sets that seem to appeal to modern set builders so I wouldn't count on that, plus, even if set building becomes popular agin in the future, there are so many current sets released that the small community of set builders will be divided up among the 30 or 40 sets released each year meaning that maybe no more than 5 or 6 active builders will be toiling on any given "modern" set at any given time ... going from there, I'd assume that 30 years from now, rookie cards and autographed stars/rookies will remain somewhat in demand among the populace.
  • Speaking for football, I would say SP Authentic, Topps Reserve and Bowman Reserve. Great RC selection, limited availability, and achieveable set size (usually under 250 Cards). SP Authentic sets also contain autographs, RC autographs, and GU cards that are part of the regular set.

We set builders pretty much were born from a market where, if you couldn't count the number of sets issued on one finger, you certainly wouldn't need more than one hand. The massive number of sets available now in any given year, going back 10 years, should work against seeing a large set-building base of collectors in 30 years who concentrate on sets of the 90's. In my opinion, in 30 years there will be a shift in attention to the truly hard to get stuff, like stadium-demoed toilet seat covers or, in the card arena, perhaps regionally issued food sets....image

I think any specific major brand set from the last 10 years will be worth much 30 years from now. I think what you will see is some specific cards will be sought after. Rookie cards, maybe some popular insert, but that's about it. There is just so much stuff out there.

I've got to go with 93 Finest Refractors. The first insert set, and an underprodiced and popupar set from the very beginning of the truly modern card era. Plus they're great to look at.

Don't forget about the one that started it all: the Topps base set. A baseball or football collector in 30 years will likely be able to work on an unbroken 80-year string of sets bearing the same band name by the same company. There will be a powerful allure for set collectors in that fact.

I think most here are underestimating the interest that people will have in insert and chase cards. Some of those cards are really hard to find. Down the road, people will be looking for the inserts of their favorite players from their childhood like Pujols, Jeter, Arod, Lebron, Brady etc. Collectors will have all the regular issues and seek the hard to find inserts.
  • I tend to agree with Nick. The base sets from Topps, and probably Upper Deck, will always have some appeal to set collectors. And with all the focus on premium sets and inserts, base sets might actually be somewhat scarce in 30 years.

If I had to pick a set, i would also have to go the Refractor rookie route. They have the Topps name behind them and they are rare.
Topps Chrome and Bowman Crome Rookie Refractors are incredible cards. Finest is okay.

2000 Upper Deck Yankee Master Collection. 25 years from now, once young Jeter fans will climb all over one another to buy a complete set.

This is worth quoting again - well said Steve!

I think that rookie cards and rare auto cards will be somewhat in demand, while most of this new stuff will fall by the wayside. There is simply way too much of it being produced, and I don't see kids today looking back as fondly on their GU cards as we do with cards from our childhood.
