Collecting in general...

If you had alot of coins in VG-F12 shape, would you try to complete the set in that shape? If you decided to go with better coins, would you keep the others or get rid of them to build the upgraded set? Build an Indian, Wheat and Buffalo in VG-F12 but upgrade the Mercurys? ..or any combination? I'm having a blast cataloging what I have but I need to develop a plan. Wasn't 1956quarterman's set nice!

  • Stick to coins with great eye appeal, regardless of its grade.

    I'd probably buy the keys first in as nice a grade as I could afford. Then you could match the rest of the coins with the keys... I probably wouldnt go more than a couple of grades over the lowest. To me, a well matched set is more attractive than one with several common gems and the rest in g-vf.

  • Typically the approach I take is - 1) Do I like it? 2) Would somebody else like it if I decide to sell?

    Those are usually the last couple of questions I ask myself when I decide on what I want. I never sold a coin that I have bought yet. Just that if I get bored with them or need the money for something else, I have a good chance to sell quicker then usual.

    Most importantly of course is to enjoy yourself and not let yourself popping viens. It`s a hobby to enjoy.image
  • there is a "fun factor" in building album collections, especially ones that don't cost a ton. There is always a few coins that are prohibative in the high grades, yet the lower grade examples hold their value nicely. I did an Indian set a while back with the minimum criteria being nothing more than a full discernable Liberty. Naturally, I had many MS coins in the set, but it was for my personal enjoyment , and I learned a lot about the series doing it.

    I built a number of such collections, and eventually sold most of them, but:

    1 - I thoroughly enjoyed doing it;

    2 - I made a little money on all the sets - not a lot, but coupled with teh fun factor, I would do it again.
