These high relief little medals are pretty common.

I believe they're mint issue but am not sure. I also believe some were minted back in the 19th century
and most of the ones seen are restrikes.

I've seen a couple at shows that were struck in brass with a medal orientation. Asking price was around $200. They had Lincoln on one side and Garfield on the other. I researched them at the time and seem to recall that there were some silver and gold strikes as well. Someone around here is sure to have more info. I've also seen restrikes as Cladking mentioned.

That's actually Andrew Jackson and George.
These were called Presidential Medals. These were made by the US Mint starting in 1861-1862. These were part of the Washingtonia varieties. Yours looks like the type they started in 1862 and were still being sold by the mint in bronze in the 1970s. Julian's book called it PR-29 and Baker 223. No clue on value but really cool. image

  • These actually appear to be Civil War tokens, but I can't be absolutly sure. Are these the obverses of two different tokens? The Washington looks to be a F-123 and the John Adams a F-137A. They could be copies, which is likely. But you said a bit larger than a dime and about as thick as a nickel, that would be Civil War tokens. Could you maybe take a bit of clearer pictures? Also take pictures of the reverses.image It could also be possible that these are presidental medals, that just happen to have the same artwork as that of the Civil War tokens.

Pictured in Julians book as 19mm.
There were a lot of these made over the years by the US mint.
Not sure if it has ever worth someone making fakes.image

  • Pictures in the Fuld book have them both at 18. So now we need to know the diameter.

  • Well I noticed he said they're on the same coin, and I just got out the Fuld book, those two are not listed together as being on the same token. That leaves us with that they could be extremely rare, and unlisted or what ldhair said, or possibly complete fakes.

What really strikes me funny is even in the 1800s the mint was selling junk to the public. image

I have to wonder if the collectors in those days were saying that about mint products.
Just think an Indian made... I mean woman made pouch for an Isabella quarter. image
