Update : It's a FAKE 1942/1943 dual date COPPER lincoln cent error

If the 1955 DD lincoln is the grandaddy of all errors.I think this might be the Mother of all Errors. It is a 1942-1943 dated (transitional?)lincoln cent on a copper planchet. It must have been stuck in the bag an restruck in 1943!.This coin was shown to me by my new brother in law who just happens to be a coin collector!(I love the guy already image)He found this in a bag of wheats in the early 60's.He has another one almost like it ,but on that one, the 3 is off the rim and can't be verified. But take a look at this one,It gives me goose bumps! You can see the faint img of a 3. I need some serious feed back here .Fred Weinberg if you read this please offer your opinion .
Any and all opinions welcomed.I will let get back to this board weds nite after 9 pm EST.

I think PCGS would be happy to grade the coin for you... submitted through the error service level. If they holder it as such an error, then it'll be much more marketable. Consigned to a big auction house in a PCGS holder probably has the best potential for strong money.

Btw... if the 1943 were struck second... wouldnt the 1943 be the stronger date and the 1942 be "faded?"

  • Definately fake. The 1943 date looks mushy and not sharp at all (look at the 1942 date that is sharper). Note how the 1943 date flows with the bust details, a real strike from a real steel die would be sharp and obliterate the design more (and look sharp). Also you have 2 of these 'rare' errors, very unlilkely if they were real. The presence of a second makes it all highly suspect, even if this one was real looking.

Most likely stuck by false dies made from a metal only slightly harder than the original 1942 coin. Remember that the 1943 cents were made from steel (low carbon steel to be sure but still pretty hard) and making a fake die via impression into a softer metal would be quite easy.

I agree- a fake. Would it be possible to show a better image of the entire obverse?

The 1943 strike would have flattened out the "1942" being that it is in the flat part of the fields if it were authentic.
    Sorry.
Beware of brother n law deals. Remember he's on HER side.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I've seen those before too, and everyone jokes about it. Totally fake.

As everyone else has already stated, this coin is
    Fake.

I've seen similar pieces (probably not this exact
coin, but I'm not sure) over the past 30++ years.

  • Thanks for the feed back all .Here is the full image.Thank you Fred .I was a little bothered by the faint secondary profile and the position of the 1943 date. The strike should have obliterated the 1942 date. Now that I have studied it a little more I see the facts clearer.

I think a fake die over a real cent is most likely the way this was done.
