Congratulations to Frank!

For hitting 9.00 on his 1975 Topps set, making him the second one to achieve that lofty status. Steve is right behind at 8.99. Jeff is closing darned hard after spending ungodly sums of money at the beginning of his quest to build this set.

Frank's a good guy, and willing to help out a fellow 75er (and I presume anyone else). If I had any 9s he needed, I'd gladly trade with him. Except my Bake McBride, I'm keeping that one.

The sad part is that he has to add about 60 points worth of tens to catch Kurt, and I don't think there are that many out there at the moment.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

    Funky Frank you the man!

  • As one of the few who have been fortunate enough to actually see Frank Smiths 1975 set, it must be seen to be fully understood. The GPA does not begin to do the set justice. The current leader in the registry has stacks upon stacks of cert #'s...10's included-- that Frank passed on opting for a superior example rather than the grade on the holder. The cards are crisp, sharp and as colorful as you can imagine.
The real deal is this: anybody who built a majority of their set 18-24 months ago was getting 8's and 9's when today those same cards are receiving 9's & 10's...Frank has posted his results from a huge crack/re-sub to prove this. Of the six nicest 70's sets I've seen in graded form Frank is the proud owner of half of those...The true KING of the 70's and deserving of "Modern set of the Year". A remarkable classic, built primarily by beating the bushes and frequent-flyer miles to Newport Beach. Awesome.

Just for giggles have Frank show you his Brooks Robinson sometime. Stunning. Congrats buddy on reaching a tough hobby goal and adhering to your unwavering standard. You're an inspiring collector.

P.S. Wait 'til you guys see what he does with '80 - '83...stupid stuff!
  • Guys:

Thanks for noticing! Although it is true that I’ve reached one milestone, my ultimate goal is to get each and every card of the set in a PSA 9 or better grade and to have each of those cards be one that I am truly happy with. To that extent, I have 23 additional cards to upgrade to PSA 9 and another 43 cards that I want to improve upon within the PSA 9 grade.

There have been so many people who have helped me build this set that I would like to thank. First and foremost would be Marc Goldman and Joe Yanello (Shoeless Joes) for providing more cards in my set than anyone else. Without these two individuals, I would have never have that set that I do today. A special thanks also needs to go out to Mike Castaldi who provided a number of cards to my set and always found a way to keep me motivated during the early days of the registry. I still remember Mike and I giving each other a hard time on the boards about passing each other on the registry when we only had 20% of the set complete. Some other folks that have provided great help to me were Joe from East Coast Sportscards, Phil Apostle, Jeff Brewer, DSL Sportscards, Robert Earhart, Steve Eberthardt, Dick Ferse, Jeff Haupt, Brian Simon, and Steve Pekovich. I know that I’m leaving out some names, so please forgive me.

Going forward I’m just planning to finish off the upgrades (including those within the grade) that I need. I will still pick up 10’s by my own submissions or that I find affordable, but I won’t be battling it out with Steve or Dick. They may still see me every now and then, but I fully expect to be the #3 or #4 set in the near future. In the meantime I will keep plugging away on the other sets I once built as a child. Once those are done, I will probably take some time off to enjoy the cards and decide what I want to do next.

I also wanted to congratulate the work that Dick, Steve, and Jeff have done.

Dick has built a set with a GPA that is truly outstanding. To put together a set of that level us quite an achievement. He said he was going to get it done and he did. My hat is off to him and he is to be congratulated on his outstanding effort! By the way, do you still need a PSA 9 Ken Singleton? I have a line on one for you.

I think Steve is the sleeper of the 1975 sets. Not only has he built it twice, he has an amazing number of 10’s, and a great eye that should lead to many more 10’s in the future. This guy was the first to get it done and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him with a simply stupid GPA at the end. Congratulations on your outstanding work!

Jeff is the newbie to the block, but is what he has done in a short period of time is amazing. He came into the set at the right time and will skill, determination, and a pocket full of cash, is in the process of putting a monster. Congratulations Jeff!

I can’t count the number of cards with colored edges I have looked at. If anyone has any questions or needs any help, please let me know. Once again, thanks for the kudos.

    Frank
Looking for 1975, 1978, and 1979 Topps Baseball in high end PSA 9 and PSA 10.
