Cheap way to ship rolls of coins?

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,377 ✭✭✭✭✭
So, what is the best/cheapest way to ship, say, a roll of nickels?

2 rolls are $4. Cost me ~$3.85+bubble envelope cost (plus gas, my time, etc image) to ship.

So, $4+~$4=$8 for 4 dollars worth of nickels.
Not a great deal unless you really want them.

Is there a cheaper way?
Am I missing something? (not sure of weight of a roll).

I am just wondering as I traded 2 rolls, twice, for "P" mints recently and I would have loved to told my traders how to ship it and save them money and also save me money.
I have another 4-6 rolls that I don't need (bank had them when I wanted "used" nickels) and I am thinking of just spending them...but, if there was a worthwhile way to ship them (that I haven't thought of since I am not a power shipping image then I would be willing to ship/trade more of them if people wanted/could use them.

Thanks image

safely packed in a $4 flat rate priority mail envelope. I've squeezed up to 24 rolls in those image
  • I think maybe it was coppercoins? that had a thread on here one time
about shipping rolls in a flat-rate priority envelope. Had pictures and
everything showing how to pack it, etc. It was pretty cool, but be
prepared for some funny looks at the very least from your local post
    office emplyees!

What about a cheap way to roll ships of coins?

Guess that wouldn't be a good idea. Then all the coins sink to the bottom of the ocean.

  • I don't know how to link it, but I found coppercoins article about this subject. It was Jan, 06, 2003 and the title was : "Getting your money's worth..." If someone else could link it to this thread it will probably save some members money.

Did you ever see those plastic inflated pillows they are using instead of styrofoam peanuts or bubble wrap to pack fragile items these days? If you could obtain them filled with helium instead of air.... image Nah, Coppercoins idea is the way to go.

At my local post office they told me a story of a guy who shipped 40 pounds of lead in a flat rate envelope from Alaska. All it cost was $3.85. As long as the envelope lays fairly flat they dont have a problem with the weight.

So, the rub is that it sill costs almost 2x the face value of a roll of nickels to ship it (if only 1 roll) and almost the same as the face value of 2 rolls?

So, unless it is for 3-4 or more rolls, it really isn't worth it, except in the cases like mine where I want the P mint and can't easily get them.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
