Need Advice on Washington Set

I use to collect coins in high school (early '80's) and was able to collect all Washington Quarters from 1940 to 1964 in MS-65. I'm not 100% sure on the grades, but I think most are MS-65. Anyway I bought a Capital Plastic holder for all the coins and I like keeping them in the holder. In the early 90's I got back into it and bought 5 coins in the 1930's. These coins are all PCGS grade MS-65's and I like all of the coins, but I would really like them in the Capital Plastic holder. I do not plan on selling any of these coins (except 2 maybe), can I remove them from their PCGS holder and will it devalue them by doing so? I mean I would hate to remove them from the holder and then have to regrade them later and not have them grade as MS-65. Somewhere on this message board I read that PCGS will grade a whole set of coins, is that true and if it is do they come back in the little PCGS holders?

Another question while I'm at it. I also have a 1932-S in MS-64. I have not graded coins in a long time and I'm not sure I ever could tell the difference between a 64 and 65. I would like someone to take a look at it to see if I should break it out of the PCGS case and resubmit. It might make a 65, I don't know. I'm going to go to the Santa Clara coin show next month and I would take it with me for someone to look at but I hate to ask the dealers because the first thing they will ask is if I'm selling, which I'm not and then they won't help me.

One last question, I have an extra 1935-D in a PCGS holder in MS-65, I also have one that is not graded and I hope it makes a MS-65. If it would, I would keep it and sell the one in the PCGS holder. I guess I just need someone to look at all of my coins and grade them, I just hate handing them over to someone I don't know. Any suggestions?

Hi! I'm like you in I want my quarter set stored all the same way and I want to make sure every coin is gem. First thing, if you have 2 coins of the same date, just keep whichever you like better regardless of grade. I would say cracking a coin out of a holder is totally fine if two things are true... it is a nice coin for the grade, not borderline, but nice, and you have no plans at all to upgrade it. By buying a handful of pcgs graded coins of each series I collect, I learned what the nicest coins for a grade, say ms65, should look like, and for me to call a coin ms65 or crack an ms65 coin out for my set it has to be every bit that nice. There are some dealers who will look at your set and give you an honest opinion, but it is tough for sometimes they are too busy and everything. Sometimes they won't look close enough and their opinion won't exactly be correct. If there's a dealer you've bought a lot of coins from he may be much more willing to help.

Little pcgs holders? I've never heard of them. That would be really neat! (I suggested something like that on the message boards once, and HRH shot it down!).

My first show ever was also Santa Clara! Some dealers are tough though. Some will always put your coins down no matter how nice they are.

  • Thanks, I am somewhat parial to the 35-D that I bought in high school but I think I will send it into PCGS for grading and I will keep the one that is graded higher.
  • OK, I changed my profile to allow PM. I don't know if it is working, let ,me know.
  • Welcome to the boards. I've just completed my high grade Washington Set. I had the same dilemma. I really wanted all of the coins to be in my album so everything was uniform. I had purchased so many of the coins raw, that going back and finding all slabbed coins was impractical. I had to make a decision. All in all I only cracked out one late 30's date that was in a PCGS slab, only because it was not a key or semi-key to the set. I would have preferred to buy it raw, but I could not find that coin in the grade I wanted it in raw, and the slabed sample came up at a great price so I went for it. Cracking it out does not lower the value per-se as long as it was graded accurately, and you paid fair money for the coin in its true grade. It does make the coin a little harder to sell for its full value if raw, so if your going to drop the bigger bucks on the key and semi-keys, I'd personally prefer a little assurance on the grade and authenticity. Some grading companies are more accurate than others so you need to do your homework, and make sure you buy the coin, not the holder. If any of your coins in slabs are the key 1932D, or semi-keys 1934D, 1935D, or 1936D, I would leave them in the slabs, and just preset your set with them on the side. You can see my recent thread on this board (Link), on how I did this. My reasoning on buying and keeping the key and semi-keys in a slab as mentioned before, was to confirm the grade by a professional third party, and more to assure me that the coin was likely authentic. I would have that raw 1935D slabed and keep both, displaying the better one with your set.

56 Quarter is right on. I have done the same thing with my Lincolns. They are in Capital Boards. But when I got to the more pricey coins I wanted some assurance they were at the grade I wanted and original. For a long time I felt that I was just going to crack every slab and fill the board. But I have done an about face and decided to keep the Capital boards complete with lower graded specimans and do the registry thing.

One of the Best things about this hobby is that you can do it anyway you like.
