Coin Dealer Ethics

What are some ethics you would like to see Coin Dealers do?
They should not lie
They should not maliciously price gouge
They should attend and do some sort of exercise and spend some of those $100 bills on nice clothes. Some well dressed coin dealers are Sil Degenova,Steve Contursi,Kevin Lipton Greg Rohan and Jim Halperin.Andy Skrabalak always looks presentable. There are some really sadly dressed coin dealers.I think David Hall needs to leave his Hawaian shirts at home.

I have never had a coin stolen from me by a dealer.
on the other hand I have been rip off at shows by COLLECTORS
more than once.
Ethics?
If you see some ripping off a dealer and do nothing you are just as guilty.
The good quickly become identified as well as the bad. Yes, I feel for some of the newbies who have difficulties in the beginning, but part of that is not doing your homework before committing significant (differs for each) financial resources into this hobby.
Most of the dealers I know are great, ethical and otherwise. But we need the sloppy ones, and over priced ones, to be able to tell the difference.
Give me a knowledgeable dealer, and Mark Feld as a backup, and I cannot go wrong. I just wish Mark had more barbers and bust halves, and I wouldn't need anyone else.
and they're cold.

I think you raise a good point, Stewart. I have often thought that "some" of the dealers at the big shows look like they live on the street. I think a little professionalism with regard to attitude and appearance goes a long way. I'll tell you that in my line of work the "grunge look" doesn't get too far.
And yes, Andy always looks like a professional.

A grungy looking normal person carrying a backpack or a spiffily dressed person carrying a case?
You took the words right out of my mouth! Being a member of a top organization, or a TPG, or wearing a fancy suit, being in the biz for 20-30 years, or having your picture in Coin World, does not make one you an ethical dealer. Some dealers meet all these requirements....and should be steered clear of. Just like in any other business.

I'm sure I'll get blasted... but I probably wont look back at this post anyway, so I guess it wont hurt my feelings...

What's that, David? Not sure I'm following you...

The dress code does not have to do with ethics.
TDN - The people who got mugged outside a coin show are generally not well dressed people.I believe Freddie Columbo got mugged in Chicago. All the other people I heard of being robbed were targets.
Do you think Laura is well dressed? presentable? polite ?
courteous?

Knowledge ( not superficial ) prevents being taken advantage of when it comes to most things.
However, at some point you pay for the education ! Let the buyer beware has been heard for generations !!
The good thing about the grading services, is that they have helped to level the playing field !!
As far as dealer appearance is concerned at most shows : any improvement would be greatly appreciated !! I have seen better dressed panhandlers on the streets !!!
