What does Hinged mean?

What does it exactly mean, how can I tell if it's been done?

I tried a search on the internet, but I got topics ranging from doors to porn, and the stamps sites said it, but didn't explain it. Please let me know.

Thanks.

Hinged means a hinge was or still is on the stamp. Its a folded piece of paper that one section of the fold sticks to the stamp back and the other half sticks to the album page; imagine a door hinge. Modern hinges are gummed glassine type of paper and old hinges may have been a just a strip of paper. Removing a hinge disturbs the gum on mint stamps. This is harder to explain in writing than if you could see a hinged stamp in person.

  • I understand, thanks for your help.
  • Got to Linns.com and type 'hinges' in the search block at the top right of the homepage. Hit GO and you will be taken to several informative articles.
