Anyone have a collecting...."buddy?"......poll

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't think I've ever seen any. Too competitive. Just can't see someone saying, "oh look at that one and how CHEAP it is" without buying it themself.

Just curious to see if any coin collectors have found a successful buddy system.

I have ridden to shows with other dealers, but other than meeting for lunch, we hit the door and split up like dropped mercury.

???????????????

NOT.....family......That is very common and a whole different dynamic.

I am in the process of turning two of my co-workers into coin fanatics. One is buying Dahlonega gold from one of my dealer friends, and the other goes to shows with me and is putting together a raw type set. I also have a neighbor/friend that I have gone to shows with several times. Coin collecting is a fun and social hobby. image

There's a couple of guys I often meet up with at local shows (and sometimes non-local shows also) and we look at each other's potential purchases. Sometimes, we get together for lunch after the show and do a "show and tell" about a coin or two we own (not necessarily purchased at the show). For the most part, we don't have the same collecting interests, not that it matters.

    Too competitive.

Not for me. Besides, I already buy too many coins. I get the vicarious thrill of my friends buying nice coins. I enjoy it just as much if my friends purchase coins, especially if I help them find the coins.

I usually just go to shows by myself as I don't really have any friends that collect. My Dad used to collect but has got into rare stamps again so he probably only goes to a couple of shows a year with me. Whenever I go to the Milwaukee area my brother comes along as he lives in one of the suburbs. mike image

As far as purchasing, it's first come, first served. If I see something I like but don't get, I alert him. He recently bought a set of commemoratives off of eBay that I wanted. I didn't bid because I knew he was going to and I will not get into a bidding war with him. We were friends long before we discovered each others interest in coins.

I have coin buddies but have never gone to a show with anyone else. Shows are close to me; time is precious and my visits to shows are brief and unpredictable.

My collecting buddies are right here. I've learned more about collecting and have shared more coins here than anywhere else.

I must admit, I like the solitude that collecting brings me.

Yes I do. I get a lot of enjoyment from the social aspects of my hobbies, and enjoy each of them more when I participate with friends.

I have also made numerous new collecting friends through these boards.

  • Splitting up like mercury sounds about right.
One guy like pennies, another likes large cents, one guy like dollars, another likes double eagles, someone else likes darkside, and another likes ancients, and still another prefers medieval coins.
I don't know how any two guys could go around together as they all are looking for different things.
