Morgan Collectors...

What do you feel is the most under rated Morgan in what grade range? Just currious....

It's a tie between three in my opinion:

    1891 in 64 and above
    1892 in 64 and above
    1904 in 63 and above

The 81 CC & 85 CC, are two very good examples, IMO. If the mintage figures are right. Not much price variation from circulated to MS grades. Funny thing is, one can usually find examples if looking for one. I'm looking forward to what others say. image

Wayne, the problem with those two dates is that the majority of their mintages survived in the Treasury hoard. For example, out of over 200 thousand 85-CCs minted, 110 thousand were in the Treasury hoard sold through the GSA. The 81-CC was very similar in numbers.

Thanks Eric, for producing those GSA numbers. 110 thousand is a lot of Morgans. That would explain why one can find a 81 or 85 CC with ease. I just noticed another one. The 1899, mintage of 330,000+ yet MS-65 prices are like there were millions. Any clue on this one ?image

Same story as the 81 and 85 Carson City issues. Most 1899 dollars that survive today were part of the hoard sealed in a vault in Philadelphia in 1929 and opened up in the late 50s. In contrast, the 1901 which had a mintage over one million is very scarce in Unc. None were in the Treasury hoard, so one can conclude that they were either all released into circulation, or any that were not released into circulation were melted either under the Pittman act meltings from 1918-1921, or the last great melt during WWII.

I just found some info that the mintage figures for the 1899, could be wrong. That some are believed to have been counted with the 1900's. image

  • Boy K6Az really does know his stuff! Trying to find a naturally toned 80CC and 81CC in F-12 to VF to match the rest of my circulated Morgan set took a long time. Easy to get a low end MS coin of the same date/mint anytime but they look stupid in an album of coins that have a little history and story behind them. I go with the 1904 too in MS 63/64.
