Sensational PCGS Mint State Collection of Kennedy Half Dollars Closing on Teletrade tonight, plus...

a great run of PCGS-PR70DCAM coins.

The PCGS Mint State Kennedy collection belongs to a collector I know, as well as a few consignment Kennedy Half Dollars I got in. Some of the PCGS-PR70DCAM coins are also my consignment coins. Always good to get the "disclosures" out of the way.

Check out the coins at www.teletrade.com - the auction closes at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time tonight. image

Was hoping that, that information would not get out. I am bidding on some of the MS coins.image
Now that it is out. There are some really nice coin there. And another example of why PCGS price guide is worthless to price your coins.

Holy cow high prices! Wow. There are a few nice ones! I have to ask though... should a pcgs ms67 Kennedy have a large nick or scrape on the top of the shield on the reverse?

should a pcgs ms67 Kennedy have a large nick or scrape on the top of the shield on the reverse?

I have no problem with a scrape or even a nick on the top of the shield provided the coin has otherwise clean surfaces and nice luster and eye appeal. In fact, that is what the MS67 grade is all about IMHO. Obviously, if the coin is lackluster with little eye appeal and a nick, then the coin might only be an MS66 or even MS65 in my book.

As for the nick on the shield. I've never seen a nick or scrape on a 67. Lower grades yes as long as they are not too noticable.
And Russ that's still 7 out here. Seahawks winning!!!! They lost in over time.image

I'll be curious to check the Teletrade site on Monday morning to see how many of these nice coins actual sold versus were bought back based on a previous reserve. If these are actual sales prices, I would suspect others may shake free and become available as these are outstanding prices, but the coins are outstanding as well.
  • wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,980 ✭✭✭✭✭
Tim: Several of the prices are even surprising me, but, overall, the quality of the coins is well above average and high quality MS Kennedys are few and far apart, especially with respect to pre-1999 specimens.

Jay - That is an MS69, not MS68.

BTW, I am not sure the 01 MS69 actually sold, as it was reserved for close to $5,000 with the juice. However, most of the other "big" coins in the sale did great. The last bid I saw on the 76(p) in MS67 was $1,540 with the juice!! The 99(d) and 02(d) in MS68 also were at $1,100 each with the juice towards the end of the sale. Many other coins were selling between $500-$1,000 each as well. COLLECTORS WILL PAY FOR HIGH QUALITY MS KENNEDYS, AS SEEN TONIGHT AT AUCTION. Congrats to the winning bidders and the collector who sold and received fair and strong prices for his "PQ" coins.

  • I would have like a couple of those coins to upgrade my collection. Prices seemed a littIe high on some.
I don't understand how a 1988D on ebay didn't sell at $40 and one on teletrade sold for $100+ on teletrade on the same day.
The 1992 kennedy's sell on ebay regularly for around $50. I think some folks won't buy on ebay.
Maybe teletrade is a better place to sell pop top Kennedy's.

Herritage sold a large number of better date Kennedys in mostly MS66 the past couple weeks.
Does anyone know where all those came from? Juding from some of the serial numbers it
    Was a large submission.

Joe: To some extent it is all about quality IMHO. Many of the TT prices were WAY over prior TT prices. Indeed, to date, TT pricing has tracked ebay pricing as far as I can tell on MS Kennedys.

The final price on that 76(p) was $1,650 incidently. Demand is usually very strong these days on 1976 dated coins due to the type collectors also wanting the pieces. Indeed, I sold 3/4 of my PR70DCAM Ikes from 1976 (pop 4) to type (driven) collectors.

It does not hurt that the 76-p Kennedy appeared to be as good as they get for that date. Thanks for the 96-s jeff in 70dcam Mitch. A pretty fair price if the coin is "ALL THERE"

Mark: I think you know (as I understand it) that PCGS uses the "double verification" process on PR70's these days. As a general rule, the few "dogs" that used to escape the building a couple years ago, don't any more. My guess is you LOVE the quality of that Jeff.

And now at $35 and still no bids!

What was with the 1969-D in MS66 that got bid to around $480 and went NOT SOLD? If that thing was reserved that high, somebody hasn't been paying attention to the market. The top sale on eBay this year was at $318 - and it's one I sold. They're really more like a $200 to $250 coin.

IMHO, the results show that people are more willing to spend top $ on coins as an anonymous buyer rather than on Ebay where the world world can beat them up publically. Do you you agree?
  • wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,980 ✭✭✭✭✭
IMHO, true BLAST WHITE 1969(d) Kennedys in MS66 are FAR tougher than lightly toned or off white pieces and worthy of a nice premium. But, I agree that the marketplace "does the talking" and yesterday the coin did not garner such a premium.

P.S. TT routinely only fetches similar money to ebay for MS Kennedys best I can tell. Great collections of solid coins bring out motivated buyers is my take.

Mitch, the Kennedy prices on there are roughly double what I got for the same coins during the past couple of months. Maybe it's the pictures or better marketing or is it my huge fan base?
  • I wouldn't hesitate bidding on coins in either of your auctions. The coins I have gotten off you two are top notch. The starting bids on some make me wonder if you are meeting the needs of a collecting community or leading the market. Other times Mitch your coins are just too pop-top limited for my budget and I couldn't begin to think of a fair price. Those ms-69 low pop coins for example. image

  • I way overpaid for one of those MS Kennedys and as usual the Teletrade bid jumped right up to my max bid at the last second.

  • wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,980 ✭✭✭✭✭
Joe: I agree -it is very hard to price super low pop coins, be it classic or modern.

Toothpuller: I got an email from a MAJOR player in MS Kennedys this morning who told me he was outbid on two coins yesterday (a very usual event to be sure for this particular bidder). My guess is you might be referring to one such coin. Understand that reserves were in place for every one of these coins well before the auction even started.

  • I guess the '69-D PCGS MS66 from Heritage on Oct 5th that went for $143.75, not including the juice, looks like a bargain???
'My name is...... Shakezula, the mic rulah, the old schoola, you wanna trip, I'll bring it to ya.....'
  • I'm sure I overpaid for the 1987-P in 67 but I have not seen that coin often in a pcgs holder much since I began looking. It can get too expensive trying to cross another flavor.
  • wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,980 ✭✭✭✭✭
MFS: I didn't see the scan on the Heritage 69(d) half. If the coin was offwhite or lightly toned, that price sounds about right - perhaps just a tad on the low end.

1987(p) Kennedy Half in PCGS-MS67. Joe- I can't tell you how many 1987 Mint sets I have personally gone through in my time trying to locate this coin in this grade. I started back in 1987-88 when I ordered something like 100 mint sets from the mint (could have been 200). I figured I had nothing to lose because the halves were going to become "scarce" mint set only coins in my mind. If memory serves me right, the sets were only around $6 or $7 from the mint and I figured I could cash out the cents through quarters that were not high end and cut my cost that way by another 82 cents. As time went on, the mint set began being offered in bulk for below mint issue price - resulting in more and more and more sets to buy. Meanwhile, the search of these sets were yielding very, very few nice coins - I finally gave up on the project, because I simply could not find enough decent Kennedy candidates for MS67. Add to that, there was really no market to sell my hoards of 1987 raw halves which I had tubed up by now. When all the dust settled, I slabbed perhaps a handful of 1987(d) Kennedy Halves in PCGS-MS67, but only perhaps 1, maybe 2 1987(p) coins in a decade's work!! I personally respect the toughness of the 1987(p) half (not to mention the clad quarters which also came "beat up" in those sets generally). image

  • This group of halves was very nice. Many of the dates have very low pops not likely to rise very quickly.
With so many coins up at once I was surprised how well the prices held. I still think of the MS Kennedys
as a very thin market. I was betting there would be some bargins, but didn't find any. Did someone
with deep pockets buy them all up or will we see lots of red on the registery?

an example of a coin I think went a little high was the 1990P in ms67. I have been tracking it.
One sold on EBAY for like $320 a couple weeks ago and on sold on Heritage for under $400.
The are only 18 and 3 sold in a month. The one on TT sold for $575.
There were like 10 in ms66 and 1 in ms67 in the last 3 heritage auctions.
I was too cheep to buy the MS67 but I bought most of the ms66 coins. In the first auction they
went for about $50 but were down to $30 by the last. The pops are up, but I bet someone went through
a lot of mint sets to get that many. They had multiples of some other better dates 73,74d,80D,81P,81D.

Datentype I put a bid on the 88D so it won't go unsold.
