Creekmur and Stautner

Almost two years ago it was decided to use the 1951 Bowman cards of Ernie Stautner and Lou Creekmur in the NFL HOF set, instead of the 1950 Topps Feltbacks. Even though I'm not a big player in that set, I decided then to pursue the rare Creekmur and Stautner cards. It took me a while to get them both and have both slabbed, but I now have the only graded copies:

I especially like the Stautner, the picture works so well with the horizontal design.

The good news is I got the cards I was after. The bad news is now I want to collect the whole set image.

  • Nice cards. I can see why you want to collect the set.

How small are those cards? They look tiny.

In researching older cards for my type set, I saw a description for a "game" card set from the early 20th century that was 3/16" wide (I can't find the reference again). That sounds like just slivers of paper.

    Joe,

Where did you get them? Already slabbed or did you submit them yourself?

I bought them both raw and submitted them. I've seen 2-3 raw of each in the past 2 years.

  • Somehow, in my dad's passion of collecting, he's totaled 4 sets of the Topps 1950. There's also a complete set of the Yellow variation, plus three uncut sheets of these cards. All of ours are ungraded, though. We're pondering putting a complete set into Mastro, but we're hesitant about selling our material. Beautiful cards, though.

Nice, DCD. I saw a complete raw set at the national offered for $20,000. It was VERY clean, certainly the highest grade cards I've seen from the set. The lone Joe Paterno PSA was offered on eBay a few months ago for $27,000. With those prices I'd have to stick with PSA 5 range, but even then the Paterno will be a pretty penny.

I'd love to see a picture of an uncut sheet, if it's convenient.

  • Joe, it's easier for me to send you emails of the scans. I can't get the pictures in here without losing detail.

    Email me at DCDSports@aol.com

    Thanks
