Local auction results- some strong bidders

Yesterday I attended a coin auction in my home area. This auction was put on by a local auctioneer that concentrates on coin auctions on a monthly basis; these normally have items ranging from low grade $5 items on up to some nice collection folders and gold in the $1000 range. The auction yesterday was a once per year special auction of higher value items of $100 or more. The highlight was an 1856 flying eagle cent NGC certified as Proof 61; a decent looking coin that the main flaw was a noticable ding approximately 2 or 3/16" long in the field and another smaller one. This sold for $14,700.

Some other results:

2 1899 Silver Certificates CU consecutive numbers $1200

1800 Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle $1 ANACS VF20 $2100

1885 V nickel, weak good, porous.... $400!

$50 Mint sealed bag of 1970-S cents...... $300

1785 Nova Consellatio (blunt rays) PCGS AU50..... $2210

1911-D gold $2.50 Indian ANACS AU58... $4000

1918/17D buffalo nickel ACID DATE..... $130

1915-S St Daudens NGC MS63... $700

1875-S 20c piece PCGS MS63 (spotted)... $1000

National currency 1902 $10 Lawrence, KS blue seal F or less.... $620

1922 Lincoln cent strong reverse VF (close to XF)... $2250

Notebook of 304 Penny variety and error coins (I thought junk... BIE, plated, etc.)... $500!

There were 200 lots total and nearly all of it seemed to bring high winning bids. Including currency; of a dozen or so lots of early currency, it all brought at least 50% more than I would have thought. But then again, I do not know much about currency. I did make one buy that I really like; a 1827 bust half PCI MS60 slab that appears to be a nice original coin with darker toning, nice luster shining through, and a very very sharp strike for a bust half (11 1/2 full detail stars, full bust, full eagle, etc). And... the fields have a proof like quality behind the toning, so it must have been an early strike with the dies. A neat coin!

Thats strong for a generic Nova in AU50, but of course it could have been a rarer variety recognized by a specialist. Or a nice coin destined for an NGC MS64 holder.

These auctions can be pretty scary- just go in knowing that even though there is no reserve these coins are protected in any number of ways. In my area there is one auction service that sells about 90% of the coins raw and not listed as problem coins- it sickens me to see local collectors paying red book prices for junkimage. You can still find some deals but be careful. mike
