71 TOPPS SET? LEFT TO RIGHT SHORT?

HEY GUYS,
I JUST BOUGHT A VERY SWEET 71 TOPPS SET.
THEY ARE REALLY REALLY NICE. IM A LITTLE CONCERNED ABOUT THE LEFT TO RIGHT MEASUREMENTS. SOME ARE UPWARDS OF 1/32 OR MORE SHORT.
I KNOW THIS IS FAIRLY NORMAL WITH 71 TOPPS BUT I WANTED TO GET ANY INPUT FROM ANYONE FAMILIAR WITH THIS TOPPS ISSUE.

THANKS

  • Deaconblues,

First just as a matter of politness, lose the Caps Lock, its very hard to read and comes off like your shouting.

1971 cards will have sporadic problems with left to right sizes, PSA will grade the cards so long as they are within tolerances, if they get too small they will come back as "Miscut", which will mean grading coupons for you. If they come back "Evid Trim", you are out your grading money.

I would say that these issues shouldn't exceed one card in ten, a ratio higher than that I would start suspecting that they were trimmed.

I would recommend sending in a sample of 2 to 5 cards, just to see how PSA handles them. If it comes out
the worst case, i.e. "Evid Trim" then you are only out a small amount in grading fees. I would also try and
find out as soon as possible so that you may be able to get your money back from the seller if they are trimmed.

I been going through and getting graded three different 1971 sets and I would say that only 10% of the cards from all three sets had the short left to right issues, and PSA has graded several of them already and I
have only gotten one labeled as "Miscut".

A bigger problem to look for is recoloring, I lost almost 2/3 of one of these sets to recoloring. Always check the edges of the cards for any black ink, if you see any its been recolored. A black light will also allow to detect surface recoloring, it helped me weed out all the recolored cards from the good cards.

    Hope this is useful info,

    Scott J.

  • Scott,
    thanks for info.

I grade many cards and know these are not re-colored,
I have purchased over 30 71 sets in the last couple years (mostly mid grade).

This set just blows all the others away.

The only thing i can think of is that they could be cut from a sheet?
It seems that the right edge appears smooth on most of the cards and left edge is not nearly as smooth.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated

    thanks

Of course the first thing that comes to mind when you say ...

    1) Measurements come up short
    2) One side is cut smoother than the other

... is that they're trimmed. But if you've bought 30 sets of 71's in the past couple years, I assume you wouldn't have been duped by that obvious trick on this one. So I'm not sure what's up. As Scott says, coloring is the most common piece of doctoring that happens to '71's, along with trimming, to conceal corner and edge wear. Maybe if you posted a couple scans....
  • hi,
    thanks again for the input.

I have seen so many whacked cards over the years and these really dont appear cut.

Most of the cards measure fine left to right and top to bottom but about 10% are maybe 1/64 short (shorter than most other topps issues).

i messaged Joe to see if could help me out on this one

I really hope its good because it has at least 150-250 8's

    thanks

Maybe submit a half dozen and see what happens. That's the best way to tell.
