Opinions politely asked for on these Large Cents.

I am endeavoring to learn as much as i can about early Large Cents. I find them fasinating and want to learn what i can before jumping head first into collecting them. I have posted several obverse pictures of various colors and conditions and humbly ask for opinions and/or critiques on them. (good color, bad color, cleaned, grade opinions...etc...) What to look for ...etc...

Thanks ahead of time image

  • I'm no expert in the field, but the color on the last one doesn't look right. You have some nice circulated large cents, and they are interesting pieces of history.

Nice coins; but IMHO, the first three have been cleaned and retoned. The last one has just been cleaned, but not retoned.

    Here's my take:

A Vf-30 Not original color, but still may holder

    B Au-53 Cleaned/ retoned

    C Xf-45 Def cleaned/retoned

D Xf-40 Looks cleaned unless its the photo
  • well, It looks like they have all been cleaned.
The first two have retoned maybe artificially.
But the second one maybe OK though, hard to tell for sure. But that second one looks like it was laquered or lightly waxed though.
The second one looks like a XF or AU coin too.
The third one looks to have been dipped as it changed color rather badly.
The last one was was cleaned but hasn't retoned yet. Looks shiny like it was laquered or waxed too.
I think on that last one, the rim dings may have given it away. But it looks like it is a MS coin.
