1883-S NGC AU-55 Morgan Dollar - Photos

StuartStuart Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here's a really pretty and original looking 1883-S Morgan Dollar in NGC AU-55 which I purchased from Bowers & Merena in January of this year, but did not get around to photographing until yesterday. It's in one of the old "fat" keyless NGC holders which may help to account for the nice toning.

I put it down and walked away for about 30 minutes (while they held it for me), and decided to go back and purchase it because it was such a pretty coin... image

Nice! Has the luster and look of a 58. I think the weak strike knocked it down to 55. This date is so expensive in MS that a nice 55 to 58 is a great alternative.

    Stuart,

Unless I'm missing something in the pictures why did it take you 30 minutes......imageimageimage

    Nice coin !!

Steve: A good question. I already had an NGC MS-62 that I feel is a shot 63, and wanted to be sure that I really liked the coin enough to purchase a duplicate.

As it turns out, I recently also picked up this PCGS AU-58, which appears to be virtually mint state 62 or 63, so I guess that i just buy coins that I like, when I feel that they have high eye appeal -- even if they are duplicates or triplicates image

    Yep, we're hoarding them!

wam98, keep your eye out. Every once in a while you will see a nice AU58 come up that looks really nice, and they aren't that expensive compared to mint state examples.

Also have an old slabbed NGC ms-62 that I paid premium bucks; $310 in 1999. Swear it is a high end 63! Awesome blend of brilliance and toning.

Here is a really nicely toned AU 83S. These are really old pics that do not do justice to this beauty. I am off to work now , but if I get a chance later I will try to get some nice pics. Your collection of 83S Morgan's is awesome Stuart. Once again-good eye.

Oreville: That was a very wise purchase that you made, because the 1883-S Morgans are currently selling for between 5-7x what you paid for your back in 1999!! Greysheet bid for MS-63's is now about $2200!! image

Eric: Your 1883-S Morgan (pictured earlier in this thread) is a very pretty original coin. Do you think that it's an AU-58, or is it perhaps a shot mint state 62??

    Your coin or mine Stuart?

Eric: Your coin -- looks like a mint state coin to me rather than an AU.

It's a PCGS MS62. I bought this about two years ago from PQ Dollars before the price boom. This is one I sure am glad I got then instead of now.

Eric: It's a very pretty (and nicely toned) MS-62 1883-S image

I had been looking for a 62 for a while, but most of what I came across were coins that were obviously dipped blast white. When I saw this one I pulled the trigger immediately.

Pics are a little darker than I would like, coin is more silvery than golden, but I wanted to show the toning. Nice coin you have there Eric.

JRocco: Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to take some new pix of your 1883-S AU Morgan, which appears to be album toned.

Thanks for sharing it with us!
