Hello fellow forum members. I intended to make this post sooner, but we have been busy at the show. It is 2:30 (CST) at the time of this post, which is being accomplished through our wireless internet/laptop set-up. LIVE......from St. Louis.
The show was not a busy show, in terms of retail traffic, however the flow of collectors was steady from start to finish. The show closes in 3 hours, but we are still experiencing retail business. Of course that could be due to the fact that 75% of the dealers have already left the show. It was business as usual for us; buying and selling at a steady pace. The market is NOT hot, nor cold.......it's just right and consistent with the past couple of years. If I had to pick an area that is really picking up, it's early type. We downloaded the October Quarterly 1 while at the show and most of the early material has +'ed.......again. It's getting tough to find the nice material, but I think all dealers say that at every show (for the past 20 years).
We did not meet many forum members at the show. I did meet with JayWalker, RYK and a few other members, but far less than the usual. I talked Jaywalker and RYK into letting me post their mug shots on the forum, but others requested that their image not be posted.
Here are some images:
A view of the main bourse room on Friday (note the traffic)
A view of the bourse from a different angle taken Saturday morning (no comment)
A view of the annex room taken Saturday

The guy on the right is James Garcia of www.EarlyUS.com. He is still banned from the PCGS forum.
Forum member RYK. Always a real pleasure to speak with RYK at coin shows.
Forum member JayWalker; very knowledgeable and friendly collector.
The coin show was directly across the highway from Lambert International Airport. Cool sky last night!
Well, that's it for now. The show closes in a couple of hours or so, and then I start my 8 hour drive home to Michigan. I will post to this thread on Monday with a final update. Happy collecting!

Maybe he's slabbed...
I was going to drive down there today, and now you can see why I glad I DID NOT!
Oh yeah? Well, you missed the lady in the lobby who was selling 30 boxes full of unopened 1964 Proof Sets. She just wanted face value for the sets.

I do wish to thank all of the dealers that did stay at the coin show on Saturday afternoon. I am extremely disappointed at the 80 percent that did leave before the show's close. When I got there on Saturday just about all of the dealers were gone. I thought that at least 75 percent would still be there since it is Saturday. I had hoped to submit some rather expensive coins for regrade to PCGS at the show and save the postage fees, but even PCGS had packed it up. I think it is disgraceful. unprofessional, and just plain rude conduct to be leaving these shows early.

In the current market, the larger coin shows apparently exist for dealer-dealer transactions, and retail transactions are a low priority. Witness the success and growth of these Trade-and-Grade/Invitational shows which are for dealers only. As a collector, I have accepted the situation for what it is, I do not expect to buy coins at shows (except circulated Buffalos for my son's set or the rare impulse purchase), and have my expectations set accordingly.
The display cases aren't all covered up with papers, briefcases, someone's lunch, etc.
<< <i>In that first picture I noticed something very different from the East Coast shows I attend:

Yet in the second picture, they're covered in tarps!
Saturday morning huh? I'm sorry dealers, but that is disgraceful.
First POTD 9/19/05!!
I do better with mail transactions. I generally have ample time to consider making a purchase, I discuss the coin with a dealer who is not harried and distracted, I have time to look at the coin at home under optimal light conditions, etc. At shows, I generally make poor buying decisions.
I go to shows to connect with dealers and other collectors, sell coins, and have others evaluate coins that I have. I do not go to shows with the intent of buying.

<< <i>Cool, great report. It's just like being there. >>
Yeah, sitting in my house alone makes me feel the same way as being at that show on Saturday! SAD
