Opinions on this Bust Dollar in ebay auction...counterfeit???

link

It just has a peculiar look, mostly like the forgery copies that are listed as well.

I'm looking and looking, as suspicious of a high-grade raw Bust dollar as you are, and I can't pick out any one smoking-gun diagnostic to determine it's a fake. It seems to have a grainy, washed-out look that many fakes exhibit...but just looking at the picture, I can't tell with certainty that it's bogus.

The seller has a feedback rating of almost 7800 with 99.9% positives. I wonder what their policy is on guaranteeing authenticity? They say "Coins guaranteed genuine," but how can I protect my right to return the coin if a TPG BB's it for being a fake?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I don't know why any seller who understands the coin market, and who really believes the valuable raw coin they have is genuine, sells the coin raw. Even if it is legit, why wouldn't you spend another $30 to likely get another $1-2K for the coin?

I did one transaction with this seller a long time ago. A standing liberty quarter, claimed to be MS but was obviously cleaned when I came to me after I had won it. I emailed the seller, he refunded my money with no problems. The cleaning issue may be why much of his stuff is not "slabbed", JMO.

Could be. But you'd still be better off, I think, getting it slabbed by ANACS and net graded. To me, the question about authenticity is much more severe than whether or not this one may be cleaned.
