Here's how I tell the 1979 wide/narrow rim varieties apart. Look at the width of the tail of the last 9 in the date. Mentally picture whether an imaginary duplicate of that tail would fit between the bottom of the 9 and the rim. On the narrow rim variety it would fit. For me, that makes it easy.
