Turnaround Times: PCGS vs. NGC

While @ Long Beach I submitted coins to both PCGS and NGC on September 8, 9 and 11th.

4 Invoices to NGC were Economy Submissions with a total of 36 coins.

2 Invoices to PCGS were 15 Day Regular Service with a total of 11 coins.

NGC submission price -- $15 per coin -- no guaranty.

PCGS submission price -- $30 per coin -- 15 day turnaround guaranty.

NGC posted that all of my invoices were received no later than 09/13

PCGS didn't even log my invoices in until 9/16/04 and 9/22/04 respectively. It took PCGS 8 and 11 days to get my orders from Long Beach to Newport Beach, 20 miles, and log them in. It took NGC 5 days to take my order over 3000 miles and log it in.

NGC posted all of my grades today. PCGS posted 1 invoice of grades today.

NGC was able to grade more than 3 times the amount of coins in less time for half the price.

I guess you must be twice as irritated.

Perhaps this would have went over better on the NGC board?image

The turnaround time for my last NGC submission was downright scary.

NGC seems to be standing around waiting for some coins to come in.

I usually always get a 3 week or less turn around at NGC

I've only submitted one batch of coins to each company in the last year, so my sample size for this is extremely limited. I had one batch of coins dropped off at the NGC booth on the first day of the Baltimore show last December and one batch of coins dropped off at the PCGS booth on the first day of the FUN show last January. Both submissions were for the Economy tier. The NGC coins were graded and shipped in 35 days while the PCGS coins were graded and shipped in 92 days. Please understand that I am going by memory on the turnaround time so I might be off by two or three days, at most.

As far as I understand, PCGS and NGC are getting approximately the same numbers of coins in their submissions. Perhaps NGC has more graders? Just a guess on my part.
