SGC to PSA Crossover

I have a few SGC graded T206 cards that i need to have crossed over. how should i do this? in the SGC holder, or out?
Also, do i have to pay an extra fee for psa to crack out the cards? can i submit the crossovers under the clup special of $12/5?

thanks

  • Definitely crack them. Try to see if they are trimmed, because sgc has graded trimmed cards that I've cracked and they come back trimmed from PSA.

You will probably get differing opinions from most people on this topic. For pre-war you should have no problem submitting the card in the SGC holder and getting a similar grade (it would be different if it was in a GAI holder).

    I would in order:

    1) Submit the card in the SGC holder with minimum grade request
    2) If the card comes back as not having met the minimum grade - crack out and re-submit

You should be able to use the specials for crossovers.
  • Aro,

I agree with the above mentioned, crackem first.

  • 1 of the cards, i would not mind cracking.. it is a common T206.
The other one is a Ty Cobb.. would you still crack it out?
  • I wouldnt. First of all I am more inclined to SGC anyways but in terms of value you wont get any more for the card in an equal grade on the market as SGC has a great rep on pre-war issues. I have not heard of any substantiated cases of SGC being bad for cut cards, I have submitted a few raw to SGC in my set that came back evidence of trim and they wouldnt grade them. I didnt see that at all under magnification. I like the SGC case better especially for the smaller cards they are framed better with the black background. If you ask me its a waste unless you have aspirations of starting up a set registry good luck on the t206 though.

  • That is the reason.. i am on the set registry.
  • It depends on the expected cross - if you don't think the card will hold its grade, don't crack. This week, I received grades back on 23 T201s that I had cracked from SGC holders. I cracked them b/c I thought it was a pretty good lot and felt the cards would at least hold their grade (if not improve). Of the 23, 11 went up at least one grade (one went from an SGC50 to a PSA 6), while 3 went down at least a grade (one went from an SGC60 to a PSA 3???). Another went from an SGC40 to a PSA 4MC, another downgrade I suppose. Before submitting them, I listed my expected grades and only 5 were graded lower than expected. I transferred them to PSA for registry purposes as well. Hope this helps - good luck.
  • Stick with SGC, the pre-war experts.

See, I can offer unbiased, impartial opinions too.

  • sticking with SGC is not really an option. I bought the card with the card for 1 reason.. I needed a Cobb for my set. I got the card at a decent price, but it does me no good for my set in an SGC holder. So, should i crack it out, or send it in slabbed? If i crack it out and PSa says it is not gradeable for whateve reason, i would not be able to sell it for what i put in it.
I think it would be best to send it to PSA slabbed.. give a minimum grade of 1 and have them crack it out. if they can not grade it, at least it will still be in the SGC holder.

I'm looking at a couple of N284 and N172 in SGC 30 holders. Do they typically cross over to PSA 2?
  • Brian:

    Aro's words were right on:

    1) Submit the card in the SGC holder with minimum grade request, ie, only crack this out if it will grade at least a 5 (or whatever).
    2) If the card comes back as not having met the minimum grade - crack out and re-submit - or sell it off and look for another.

You should be able to use the specials for crossovers.

  • My recent experience with trying to crossover from SGC has not been very successful. All cards were from the 50's and very high SGC grade (88,96,96) and none of them crossed to the equal PSA counterpart. Frankly, I will NEVER try a crossover again. I don't see why PSA even does this (aside from making money on the hope that a card will crossover).
They have nothing to gain(they already dominate market share), they aren't going to cross anything over that is marginally close, only the absolute rock solid cards crossover. Crack them out and submit them, that is what I did. I'll get my answer in a few days. I want my cards in PSA holders anyway!
