New Inherited Collection

Hello All,
I have noticed several people asking for grading opinions on coins. I am very new at this as I just inherited a substantial collection from my grandfather's passing. I have one coin I'd like to see if I get any comments on. I have a scanner and was wondering what resolution I should scan it. My scanner goes all the way up to 19200 ppi but the file becomes enormous. Any suggestions? Thanx in advance.

Scanning at 600 DPI should give plenty of detail.

Scan the coin at a high resolution and then use software to resize the image.

if you can get the size down but not close enough to attach it here, someone can probably slap it into a webspace for you for your thread.

True.If you,ve never posted a pic of yours on a webpage, just email it to someone here and they can post it here.
Otherwise, post the said coin about full-screen size for more accurate grade opinions.

  • I have a very hard time grading those incuse design gold coin. I sure do like the way they look though! That looks like a good one. If there are more coins of that caliber in the collection I would agree it is indeed substantial. Welcome to the boards!
  • Nice Coin.

Welcome Randy. You might receive more replies about the imaging if you edit/change the title of your thread to reflect the information you are seeking.

Please accept this as a friendly suggestion that I have previously made to a number of other seasoned froum members, as well. image

    Welcome to the boards, Randy!

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but just in case - do not clean your coins in any way, shape or form, and handle them by the edge only (especially coins of the caliber of the one in your photo). Do not sell anything without doing some homework first.

That's a great photo. Wish I could grade those, but they are tough for me.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Then you are very, very fortunate. I envy the time you will spend learning about these coins and organizing them. You may also make some nice money if you decide to sell some of the duplicate pieces, and you may be interested enough to buy other ones you don't have.

your 1908 quarter eagle appears to be a very nice coin grading somewhere between AU58 and MS63 (one would have to, I think, tilt and rotate the coin in the light to give a more precise answer.

Feel free to post any other coins!

  • Thank you Baley,
I will post more as I find 'em. And plenty of duplicates. A minimum of 5-10 proof sets per year dating back to 18something. Boxes and boxes of Indian cents, 2cents, 3 cents, half-dimes, Morgan dollars, Peace dollars, 1884 and 1883 CC Morgans Unc. etc, etc etc. I really don't know what I have yet , but it looks like I am going to have alot of fun on this board. Thank you all for the welcome(s).

Randy, it sounds as if you might be dealing with considerable value there. I would urge you to be extremely cautious, security-wise and even to be careful about the information you disclose publicly here.

That said, I hope you have a blast and encourage you to ask questions as they arise.

Wow, everyone welcomes the newbie, compliments him, and you warn him? What provoked that?

  • Wow! Proof coins get tiny scratches (hairlines) very easily. They are also worth a bunch when they are older than 1942. It is something to have just one proof set from the 1800s. So be careful not to have them rub against anything. I have some proof coins that were stored in a cardboard holder with a plastic slide, the slide rubbed against the coins reducing their value.

Everybody will want to get involved with your collection. Hopefully you have the time to go very slowly with learning about it. Security is also a real issue and it would be worth while to have a large safe deposit box to store them in.
  • Thanks Carl,
I have two huge floor safes (Brinks) installed and bolted to a concrete floor. My place is also wired to the hilt with alarm systems, motion detectors etc. It might be overkill, but we've had these systems for years due to some previous business transactions. Just never know when the security would come in handy again. Thanks for the advice. More pics to come.

are you saying you have 5-10 proof sets from every year back into the 1800's?

sounds like a mother lode. Sounds like fun going through it.

  • Yeah JBSteven,
I don't know exactly (yet) when they begin but, going backwards, I haven't found any missing years yet.

contact me privately if you find a complete 1933 proof set (especially the double eagle).
  • BaleyBaley Posts: 22,660 ✭✭✭✭✭
Please be very very careful handling the coins, (hold by edges, do not drop the coins or let the surfaces touch anything)

Under no circumstances should you clean or otherwise attempt to do anything to them

(sorry if you already know this, but it bears repeating)

Oh, and yes, lot's of folks might offer to "help you out" and buy some of them image

take your time and enjoy the process, a wonderful world of numismatics is about to open up to you

(ps: one of the next things you should show us is one of those early proof sets!)

    Hi Randy:

Congratulations on the nice things you've inherited! There has already been some excellent advice posted here about carefully considering how to handle a collection of potentially sizable value. Coinguy1's advice would be wise to heed.

On that note, I might advise you to turn your PM (private message) function on, as there are some details and questions that are probably best not posted to the group as a whole.

Best of luck sorting all of it out! We are here to help.
