    Dipped in acid. Apparently a very common science experiment in the 1960s was to drop a copper cent into acid and watch it dissolve. From time to time you'll see these passed off on eBay as a 'cent on dime planchet'.

    That's it!! Look at the indentations on the edge of the obverse. Those are bottle cap marks!

    Cents were often altered back in the 40's to '70's for use as dimes in vending machines.
