In the Q&A forum, HRH was queried about the PCGS price guide (again). His reply was:
"The PCGS Price Guide is for PCGS graded coins only. The price represents the "average dealer asking price," i.e. it's a buying guide for collectors. Prices are derived from auction prices, dealer retail ads, wholesale transactions, and dealer and collector input. We have done a great deal of work on the price guide in the last three months but we have a lot more to do. I am personally very involved with the price guide because I feel it's very important for market participants.
Thanks,
David"
This may be true for individual coins, but certainly not for ALL the coins listed in the Price Guide. For
example: the price guide lists prices for 1948- 1958 mint sets. I really can't accept that these prices are for mint sets that have been slabbed.

Q&A - CU Price Guide
now exactly how much does it take to grade and slab the coin. what say, more than $16, +/- shipping/insurance. how can it have a PCGS FMV of $16 when it costs more to slab it then that? should it not be $16 plus grade/slab costs?
i have always used numsimedia's price guide, until they blocked collectors from viewing it, without coming up with $$$$.
If PCGS has certified it as a VF, it's worth $16. The piece of plastic adds no value in itself. The free market is also callously unconcerned with what one has "invested" in an item.

A coin worth $1 in a plastic slab is still only worth $1
The value of plastic is only relavent in high grades - when a coin becomes worth many times more after going from a 66 to 67 grade. It's not really the plastic that makes it worth so much more, it's the paper insert.
