Has anyone ever tryed to re-color an over-dipped Copper coin ?
I found an obviously dipped nice old Large Cent the other day in a garage sale. Not intending to try and slab it or anything but thought i'd use it as an experiment piece.
I've seen auctions on ebay for something called "Dellers Darkener" but thought i'd try experimenting with maybe some common household items ?
Suggestions ?
Thanks

Would you note it on your 2x2 or whatnot and let future owners now?
(I am actually not trying to be sarcastic either....I have something similar and haven't tried/asked because I figure I would just let it retone naturally and over a long period of time)
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

"doctoring"? ........... yes , probably.
Acetone to clean a coin ............. "doctoring"? .... probably, you're trying to change the way a coin looks.
My garage sale coin ......... No future owners. not for sale or trade.
patina on bare copper. Make sure the copper is clean of all oils or residue.
Deller's appears to be a solution of sulfer in petroleum jelly. It work slowly
(over several months) and looks better that the (rather harsh) first method.
Is this coin doctoring? Ofcourse it is. Will you fool a professional? No way.
The whole idea is to take a rather ugly orange coin and turn it into something
you can put in your album or in your collection. It will never holder.
Please check out my eBay auctions!

EXACTLY !!
All I would do is give it an acetone bath to remove any oils that might be on the coin and then set it atop my monitor for a while and let it darken up naturally.
that's kind of difficult... they look odd. Little Deller's darken that right up, look better.
