How useful are the Garrett/Dannreuther books on auction records?

Does anyone use these books in determining prices and trends, or for any other reason? Or should someone just track their particular series of interest on a spreadsheet using prices realized lists? Any comments on how you might use these books?

I think such auction prices realized can be helpful in a number of ways, among them:

    1) You might want to know what a given coin or coin type (rare or otherwise) sold for previously.
    2) They provide information which can assist you in determining price trends.
    3) They provide information which can assist you in assessing the relative prices/values of various coins.
    4) They can illustrate precisely how two or more coins of the same date and grade can sell for vastly different prices.
    5) They might allow you to compare the prices realized for a given coin/grade sold by two or more different auction companies during the same time period.
