Was at a beachouse in Bodega bay for the past 4 days. Had a great fireplace. I couldn't resist so i put in a modern rosy dime, statehood quarter and 1998 cent. The dime and quarter got red hot but thats it...although they are super dark now. The cent actually melted. The outer covering of the cent got white hot and the inner metal of the coin turned completely molten and dripped out to make a metal blob. Was pretty neat.

I've played with some pocket change myself. I would put it on my wood stove to get all kinds of funky colors. Ultimately, they all turn black. Maybe now I'll put them IN the wood stove instead.
Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.

I even autographed it
As for coin mutilation -- I've got a thing that looks like a volcanic cinder that used to be a nice PL, choice AU 1964 Charlottetown Dollar (Canada). I can't recreate the sequence of thoughts that led me to think it would be a good idea to introduce it to my wood-fired boiler -- nevertheless it happened somehow.
