Three coins in the fountain

So do you ever throw coins into fountains or wishing wells, and why do you do it?? You know someone is only going to come along and scoop up your money and put it in their pocket. I laugh inside when I go to the mall and see all the little pools of water with coins in them. Where did the tradition of tossing coins into the water come from anyway??? image

Throwing a coin in a fountain is, to many, a token gesture in return for a wish. Are your wishes not worth a penny? Mine areimage

I know the coin will be (probably) ill-gotten-gains for the fountain robbers...but...my wish has been invested in!

  • The tradition of throwing coins in a fountain started with MadMarty several years ago. He would visit a fountain everyday and throw in an AU-58 Franklin or one of his recently body-bagged coins. He would then wish for a Pop-1 coin, or at least an MS-61 Franklin instead of an AU-58. One day, he got his wish, when he made the finest known proof Cook Island dong coin. Ever since then, people throughout the world have been throwing coins into fountains.

  • Actually, isn't it really bad luck to take a coin from a fountain? Or so goes the tale.

I was in Philadelphia a few years back and visited the Mint there.

Right down the street is where Ben Franklin is buried and I threw a penny on his grave.

It's the local custom, or so the sign said, but since Ben already told us a penny saved is a penny earned I guess it's just payback for him (or at least for the guy who collects the pennies)

  • Usually the coins are scooped up and donated to charity when the fountain is cleaned. I've never seen anyone scoop coins out, except on a commercial for an insurance company.
