Can earlier modern proofs grade 67 with haze?

I just acquired some stunning proof coins from the late 30's. they originally graded 66. If they have milky original toning, can they go 67 or would that hold them back from an upgrade? Would NCS take them on without ruining them?

I saw many, many milky 67s in Pittsburgh (Walkers). The kicker is, does it have hidden hairlines or somesuch? Yep, NCS could prolly "fix" it. Will it stay stable?? Who knows.
  • Hi,
I used to collect 36-42 Proof coins exclusively and my suggestion is please don't alter them!. It is VERY hard to find fully original Proof coins from the 30's anymore. All I have seen lately is blast white after blast white in the higher grades, and after a while all those screaming white Mercs and Walkers get boring. There is NOTHING like the look of an original Proof Mercury - I had a Pr66 '39 10c haze/milky whatever (that many people really dislike) and it is honestly beyond me why anyone would wish to remove, permanently, such natural original surfaces. My icon coin was not easy to find - everything dipped image As far as the upgrade & NCS - I have no opinion. My interest lies in seeing the coins remain as they have been for almost 70 years. I don't consider the coins as described "problem" coins - which are the only true candidates for NCS IMHO. My .02

  • I think there is a big difference in HAZE and toning. At least there is in my eyes.

Can we get some pictures of the proof coins in question??
My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable !

Yes, there is - but the coins, as described, are both original and the "haze" was described as "milky original toning" - only I used the word "haze" to describe a coin I had owned.
The surfaces of the coins in question were not spoken of in a disparaging manner - I don't think these Pr66 coins (unseen as of now) meet my humble criteria for dipping/conservation. But then very little does.
