Non-Registry Sets

I like the PSA Registry, even if it does turn collecting into a competitive sport. But I wonder how many sets/near sets of otherwise Registry worthy cards there are out there? I know that I have been outbid on high grade cards from my Registry sets consistently by the same few people, but those cards and collectors never show up on the Registry.

So here's the question. The Registry is great but it is really not representative of all of the higher grade sets/near sets, so what portion of the Registry-able sets and near set are actually ON the Registry?

Thanks!

  • I'm sure the figure varies by year but I would estimate that half to two-thirds of sets that are being built are not on the registry.

I would think that the majority of slabbed sets are on the registry, though it may be a bare majority. I'm sure most of those that aren't are held by a small number of collectors. I'd have to think that the vast majority of people who get involved with the registry do so through the website, and so would want to join in and display their stuff. These guys might build one or two sets that they really care about and want to join the community. But those that "discover" the idea of slabbed sets independently, or are otherwise intensely private, may not get into the publicity of the registry. And there are those few who have a lot of sets registered but kept private, which is practically the same thing.

Of course, I say this as I'm building a set with the intention of springing it on the registry when it's complete (or nearly so), even when I've got a half-dozen sets registered.

I had a '69 collector buy some PSA cards from me on eBay. He'd never heard of the registry despite buying slabbed cards . Since I told him about it, he is now on the registry. There must be a bunch more like that out there plus some very private deep pockets collectors who aren't on the registry. Then you will have the guys who want to input a near complete set all at once, as helionaut mentioned. There have been several of those just this year in the sets I collect. My feeling is that Zodiac may not be far off percentagewise.
