A dumb question from somebody who has collected as long as I have.

Would somebody please explain the British system of grading to me and how does it correlate to what I would consider the US version on darkside grading. What the heck is aVF, etc? image

Grading is just one person's opinion versus another. Set your own standards and stick to them. Nice coins are always nice and dogs are always dogs...regardless of what the grade on the holder says. In the end, the price is the grade.

True, at least in an auction (except few UK coins are certified).

UK Auction grades tend toward the very conservative side of things from what I've witnessed compared to the true grade. Same deal as the US firms which give low estimates, and then go "golly gee", look at how much we got for this coin, etc.

Plus, in the UK, 98% of the coins are raw, therefore one Houses gEF might only be a PCGS EF45, where anothers could range from say, PCGS AU55 to actually MS63ish.
