  • I am going to jump and say MS66 1878 rev 1878

It's none of the ddo's that I can tell.....eyelids and lips look clean
No tripling of the 2nd star rt of datem
    No triple boll or leaves
can't tell if it's 7 or 8 feathers as no rev is shown
    initials aren't inclused

This is going to be a dang good contest.

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
  • Dam.... It's not a Peace $...... o well.... I lose.....image
  • Sheesh, a '78. The most difficult date to attribute...and no reverse. You're going to make us work for it image. At work now, but tonight I'll give it a go.

  • VAM 203.Short leaf at front of Libertys headdress?

    MS 64.

An excellent guess, but not a Short Leaf sorry. Not a Reverse of 1879 coin either. Here's your hint:

Look at the stars. Something is wrong with one of them.

One star has only 4 full points with one partial point. But I don't have a VAM book so I can't attribute. Grade is MS 65 image

VAM 32, MS 64. So much fun!! Thanks for the hint, I kept looking at the leaf, but it didn't look quite right.

  • Sheesh......was looking right at it when I was looking for the other tripling and totally missed it.......btw....did I at least get the grade correct and did I knock down the other applicable obv vams?

    Thanks,
    This one ROCKED!!!!

  • Well the 32 looks like a lock to me. No new discoveries that I could find. So I guess the grade will be the tie breaker. I want to say AU-58 just to be different, but I just can't see any rub. So I'll go MS-63.

  • vam 32 ms64
  • He already said it wasn't a short leaf (203).
    Bill
  • Since I have no book on vam's, all I can go by is what I find online (which is like.. nothing).

Will guess it's VAM 141, but probably not. Grade looks to be MS64, maybe even PL.

Key here is the die polishing line through IB of LIBERTY. Confirmation is the 4th star right of the date being broken.
The unique die polishing line alone is a dead giveaway. VAM-34 also has a broken star, but no polishing line.

VaM-32 is correct! This is a Top100 7/8 variety and untra rare...The correct grade (according to the new owner)
is MS63PL. DorkGirl was closest and is the winner. Please PM me your address for your giveaway prize!

Congradulations to VAMCollector, for outsnipping me on this coin on eBay. Amazingly, he was able to attribute the variety
from the small auction photo. If you look...the polishing line through IB is clear there:

    eBay auction

Thanks for playing and kudo's to DortGirl!
  • That is indeed Uber rare!!!!

    Good Job Dorkgirl!!!!!

  • Hey wait a minute! I attributed VAM 32 too (although I probably wouldn't have got it without the hint). I thought the grade was a tie breaker...I guessed MS-63. Is MS-64 closer to MS-63PL than MS-63?

    I demand a recount image

P.S. DorkGirl can keep the prize...I just want a little credit image

  • Um....sd is right.......

BTW....is there any prize for discounting all other VAM's without including the winning one? I'll just give myself a pat on the back........

There's a whole lot of VAM's to eliminate when it comes to the'78.

SD: You did great too! DorkGirl was first, that's all.
  • Thanks. I feel better now. (I need constant praise!)
