Another important lesson learned at the coin show...

In the past, TomB has had a table where all the board members hung out to talk and show off. In the last two months, though, he hasn't had it, and show-and-tell had to be elsewhere. Today, we found a nice spot at an intersection between two aisles and a few members began passing around coins--it was fun.

Then, a dealer, apparently the guy behind the show, told us we were too close to his table, and we happily moved a bit from it--as far as we could tell, we weren't blocking traffic, so we were ok where we were. Then, the dealer comes out again, telling us we can't do what we're doing--period. You can't conduct business on the floor. First off, we were just showing coins off, and nothing was bought/sold/traded. Secondly, I've never heard that deals can't be done on the floor... that doesn't make sense to me still... at all. Bustman attempted to explain that the idea that what we were doing wasn't wrong, but eventually "lost" the argument with someone else who pretty much said, "that guy's the boss... what he says goes."

At least NJCoinCrank was kind enough to let us use his table to have some fun and enjoy each others' collections. So, thanks to crank, and a few new lessons learned... an interesting day indeed...

Why didn't you tell this person to piss off?

  • I experienced the same thing at the 2004 FUN show. A few forum friends and I were passing around coins, showing off our newps when we were approached by security guards and told to "knock it off". We weren't around anyone's table. When explaining what we were doing, we were rather forcefully told that if we didn't stop immediately, we would be escorted out of the building. One of them mentioned that "people pay money to sell their coins here, and you can't do it for free." Even though no one was selling anything. Kinda takes the fun out of it if you ask me. image
We are finite beings, limited in all our powers, and, hence, our conclusions are not only relative, but they should ever be held subject to correction. Positive assurance is unattainable. The dogmatist is the only one who claims to possess absolute certainty.

That is why shows have security to take care of someone like you.

Airplanenut is smart enough to know this.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?
  • I have been on both sides of that fence. Bottom line amounts to the fact that the sponsor, business owner and so on, spent money to promote the event and sees business done at his expense as unfair. When I first experienced this, I was offended. But later in life, as a business owner, I fully understood.

If I'm merely showing coins to someone (as the forum people were), I sure hope security does forcefully "take care" of me -- for the next step will be aimed squarely at the security company's wallet. And that's no idle threat.

I don't know who you think the show sponsors are, but they have no right to make up baloney rules about a couple people showing their coins to one another. In other words, when someone says, "that guy's the boss... what he says goes," well bullshiit to that line of nonsense. (And I've yet to see any admission rules that say you can't show a coin to another show attendee, which, again, is f-ing ridiculous.)

and sees business done at his expense as unfair.

But as plane made clear, that's not what was taking place.

    Sequitur,

It's all well and good to pick a battle, but over this issue it's such a stupid thing to do--I have to worry about things like getting my college applications done, keeping my grades as high as possible, and take an occasional breath... I don't need a lawsuit to take my time.

This is the kind of stuff that should be reported to the ANA. If you're not doing business, what's the harm. If someone asked me to see a coin I had just purchsed, I would much rather show it to him where there are people around and not outside in the parking lot.
