Is there anything wrong with this 1934-s peace dollar? Also, what do you think it grades?

I'm going through the old coins I got with my dad as a teen and I am trying to get rid of most of the ones we are not really interested in. What does this thing grade and what is the "muck" on it? Is that normal on peace dollars?

Any help would be great!!

Thanks!

  • Long scratch through the tiara, a multitude of fingerprints, lots of wear, bagmarks and nicks, probably wouldn't get more than a F-VF.

It'll get a lot of bids just for being a key date, though.

I could well be wrong but it looks like a case of PVC on that one. Have you tried some acetone on it?

Looks like pvc/fingerprints. I think acetone would help. overall grade looks about F or so. Worth around $20 IMO.

What they said -- and one heck of a weak strike.

Acetone can be purchased at any hardware store, 100% pure. The fumes are highly flammable. Make sure there are no points of ignition around when you give your coin it's bath. After the acetone bath, rinse coin with distilled water.

  • It would grade Fine. Some rim damage on the bottom obverse and fingerprints. Surface looks tampered with.

Definitely covered with PVC, tough to tell under all that goo, but I suspect that that coins grades quite abit higher than F/VF. I think if you can get that stuff off, your looking at Xf min?

Does pvc rub off? Thiss "goo" is almost like a gummy substance...
