Coins with holes - a good idea?

Hi, Everybody -

Here's a pattern 1C with a hole in it:

holed 1C pattern

Would it have been good if the U.S. had adopted coin designs with holes? Can you think of any advantages to using holed coins?

    Some advantages to holed coins...
1)We could all have LordM's holey coin outfit
    2) You could wear your money on a bracelet/necklace (no more pickpockets)
    3) You could put a string through them and drop them in Coke machines over and over again. (I have not done this)

    BTW, cool pattern!

Reminds me of the tax tokens my grandparents used. They kept them together on a large safety pin instead of lose and easily lost. Only advantage I can think of for the hole.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

They would be cheaper to use than buying washers.

  • It's possible the hole was intended to take a silver plug. I saw a pic in a magazine recently of an early large cent pattern that had a silver plug in the center to bring the coin up to it's full face value.
